`Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Malachi Mullinax. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Malachi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Our new record Betty Ford Club has been a big deal for us to work on. The songs are all about our mistakes and flaws and how we grew from them, and it all comes from such a personal place that it’s been cathartic to write them and work them out at practice and onstage. This is our most honest record so far and we can’t wait to release it!
Malachi , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The Posters are a punk rock band in Phoenix. Our albums “Off The Couch” and “Ambush!” are available everywhere on streaming; we are preparing to record drum tracks on our third album “Betty Ford Club” and hope to have it out by summer 2022. We play a lot of live shows at local punk hangouts like Yucca Tap Room, Time Out Lounge, Gypsy’s Roadhouse, Groundz Zero, The 44, and many others.
We try to write material that is different than most of the other punk rock around because we want to get booked and sell records. The hardcore and metal scenes are crowded and loud so we go in a direction that is more pop and folk influenced. We also have to distance ourselves from the “pop-punk” label that is cursed for at least a generation by emo bands. There isn’t much of a genre label for us but we are big fans of bands like A Giant Dog, Playboy Manbaby, Decent Criminal, Bad Nerves, and FIDLAR, and we try to make music that is fun like theirs.
Our proudest moments have been getting the chance to open for some of our favorite bands like Agent Orange and A Giant Dog. Even if we had to beg onto the opening slot, those nights were unforgettable!
We want anyone who listens to know that we won’t lie to you or waste your time; our songs are all brute honesty and crunchy riffs start to finish, and we hope y’all have as much fun listening to them as we did recording.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
We love old school punk rock music and want to keep it alive and growing. We basically pretend like emo never happened and start over at the garage-y DIY stuff from the 80s and early 90s and keep going, with a lot of blues rock and thrash metal influences in the rhythm section.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
We started out as more of a hardcore band with screamed vocals and power chord riffs, but we found that people had trouble hearing our vocals at shows, and we were competing with some of the best hardcore bands in the southwest like The Linecutters, Blotter Vision, Bad Image, and a bunch of other great bands.
We switched to singing most of our lyrics so we can keep the mic a lot hotter in a live setting, and have been experimenting with more rock and folk based riffs that set us apart musically.
