We were lucky to catch up with MAKO Girls recently and have shared our conversation below.
MAKO , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Our first time knowing that the entertainment industry was a career path we wanted to pursue was after meeting the boy group Mindless Behavior in July of 2012. Soon after meeting them we purchased their documentary, watched it and became immediately inspired by their journey and the impact they had on the world. With us being 10, 12, and 14 years old was ambitious enough to take our love for dancing and entertaining to the next level. Our youngest member (A-Ni ) found our vocal coach that we work with for 10 years of our career. And in 2013, we solidify ourselves as the MAKO Girls, started doing artist development, and transforming our passion to a career.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are the MAKO Girls, (Mimi, A-Ni, and Kena Ochoa) sisters of West Indian descent and an Urban Pop Girl Group from East Atlanta. What sets us apart from others is our fashion, genre of music, performance style and energy that we bring to the stage. We are not your traditional girl group, with each member having the ability to sing, dance and rap. The energy that we bring is always fresh, fun, and inspiring. We are proud of breaking barriers as an independent girl group, creating our own annual event in our city, having our music video premiered on MTV Spankin New and collaborated with major brands such as Nike x JD Sports, Good American, Beats by Dre, and Colour Pop just to name a few. We would like to show our supports/fans that if you are passionate about something you can turn that into a career. We live by these words every day by wearing multiple hats in our career accomplishing different task that is required of us to do on a daily basis. With music being the foundation of what we do we are also able to branch off with other endeavors such as becoming content creators, entrepreneurs, and more.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our goal is to become the next household name. Creating a legacy that lives beyond us. We want our fans to not only appreciate but respect our showmanship. And most importantly build a community that pours into us and much as we want to pour into them.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that we had to unlearn while being in this industry is that though you must be professional, there is also a level of vulnerability that you have to show to your audience. Being too polished can often lead to a lack of relatability to your audience that wants to be able to resonate and connect with you.
