Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Makida Coulter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Makida , appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
JME, House of Posh is the brain child of 3 generations of women who love fashion and design. The business was created when myself (CEO) and my daughter, Jazmyn (V.P. Of Marketing), were working together to launch a jewelry business. During the brainstorming process, my mother, Eva (V.P. of Sales), was brought into the discussion regarding the name of the company. My mother thought it would be a great idea to combine the initials of our first name which created “JME” for Jazmyn, Makida and Eva.
Myself and Jazmyn’s inspiration for the second part of the company name was the term “Posh” which is a British word that means “classy, elegant, and refined.” We decided to add “House of Posh” as we felt this was very fitting for our line of jewelry – high quality, beautiful pieces for every occasion – making any woman feel fabulous!
Makida , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for fashion and beauty started at a very young age. I learned from my mother, Eva, who was always dressed to the nines—from her hair to her outfit to the accessories. As a result, I inherited those same traits as I have a natural gift—an eye for fashion and design.
Because of my love for the fashion and beauty industry, as well as my daughter Jazmyn’s natural artistic gift, we decided to create our own fashion jewelry boutique where we could offer beautiful, chic, trendy, and affordable statement pieces that would make anyone feel fabulous. With three generations of women working together for one goal, it became known as JME, House of Posh. The vision was reached on September 30th, 2020—Jazmyn (VP of Marketing – Daughter), Makida (CEO/Visionary), Eva (VP of Sales – Mother)—three generations of women brought together by a love of fashion.
When fashion and beauty mix, non-stop happens!
What I am most proud of is our brand is unique. We offer both high-quality and affordable pieces – our customers get a luxury feel without the luxury price. Our packaging is beautiful without being wasteful – our packaging can be repurposed. In addition, our fast shipping means you can start enjoying your new items right away!
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
In the various leaderships roles I’ve been in, I would always start by asking the team what they needed from me as their manager, and then I make sure that I’m not just providing what they ask for but also asking them if there are ways I could improve. I always wanted to make sure that I was aware of any adjustment needed on my part.
High morale in the workplace has always been a big one for me, whether in leadership roles or not. I always want to make sure that I play my part and lead by example.
Keep an open door policy! if there is ever a problem or issue that needs attention, you would want to ensure it gets dealt with quickly. That way, everyone would know that you’re all in this together.
In addition, be inclusive – one thing that encourages high morale is giving your team the opportunity to be part of decisions that impact them. If they feel like they’re being heard, they can focus on the task at hand without worrying about whether or not their input will be taken seriously.
You want to do your part in contributing to your team’s happiness and giving them the tools to do their best work. We all know the happier your team is, the more productive they will be.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
One great way we acquire new customers is from word of mouth.
When you have customers who love the jewelry pieces and tell someone else, those people will tell someone else, and so on. This is how businesses grow from being small to large. It’s also why it’s important to treat your customers well!
Being known already is another way our business is growing. When customers come to our online store, we are expecting them to love what we have to offer and are never disappointed!
Social media is another great marketing tool we are using to grow organically – people see pictures of our jewelry on Instagram or Facebook and want to know more about it. If someone likes what they see on social media, then they’ll want more information about how they can buy what they saw or get more of it themselves!
