We recently connected with Makenna Hammer and have shared our conversation below.
Makenna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always known. I remember growing up I was told I had to pick a sport, and I was great at golf. I even played through college and went pro for two years.
I tore my mcl during a tournament and at that point, I think I officially chose my own path.
I’m thankful for the experience and mental strength golf taught me, but the further I continue down my artist path the more it feels like im coming home.
It’s as if I alway had it in me, and I had to get the blessing in disguise of injury to receive that. Honestly it feels very cool because a massive source of inspiration from my art comes from these tower moments and strengthening my connection to myself and everything around me
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Where to start….
My brand is IN222THEVOID, a collaboration of my two worlds: tattooing and modeling.
The fashion industry is famous for high standards of specific models and its time alternative models are added to the lineup in editorial fashion.
I’ve always felt myself having rebel energy, and doing the impossible has been my forte. Through immersive photography with tattoos I’ve done myself on myself, I feel like I get to open a door for more badass women like myself. Talent and looks can coexist, and the industry has been waiting for a breakthrough in this area.
My clients are fashion brands and designers. I reach my audience through 350k overall following amongst platforms. Through posting brands i get to share my creativity by creating the concept and look for a photographer, then showcasing emotional/edgy editorial style modeling.
In a few years, i hope to see myself walking for designers in New York Fashion week, traveling internationally for commercial modeling, and ideally have been in a few music videos.
Between designing and doing my own tattoo art, and modeling runway walks and more, I hope to bridge the gap between alternative women and high end fashion. That’s the niche.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Authenticity is key.
When I say authenticity most people think “oh just be you” …. But here’s the thing. Do you know you?
The hardest lesson for me was realizing I in fact, did not know myself, so cultivating a creative persona would be pointless until I did this. Get introspective. What do you want and who are you? Now is who you are currently someone who can receive what you want?
I did a lot of vision boards, a lot of crying, and a lot of failing before I found my path. Once I clocked who I was. I used the new found confidence in self to create a game plan rooted in authenticity.
Quality is most important, second to finding yourself and sticking to yourself.
The rest will follow!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
