Makenna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the arts. Whether doodling in a coloring book or crafting whimsical short stories, I have always loved expressing my creativity. However, my introduction into the film world, namely animated films, has defined my artistic pursuits. Having the ability to showcase breathtaking visual art and pair it with poignant storytelling? Now that is magic. As I grew, I became more and more awestruck by the beauty and power of animation, and my passion to pursue a career in the animation industry was born.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Hello! My name is Makenna Gries and I am a 3D character animator! Born and raised in Wisconsin, I am grateful to pursue my studies in animation at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Art, whether in observation or creation, has captivated my interests all of my life. After my family introduced me to animated films throughout my childhood, I instantly fell in love with the art form, and became determined to create films as memorable and inspiring in my professional career. Even though I did not have access to begin learning animation until arriving at my university, I dove into my artistic passions and continued to explore and create different art, from traditional and digital drawing to painting. Throughout each project I pursue, I strive to convey authentic, passionate and vibrant storytelling. Over everything I have accomplished in my life, I am most proud of, and most grateful for, my family. The love, guidance, and support of my parents and sister have motivated my artistic journey beyond my wildest dreams. For that, I am forever grateful. My ultimate dream is to work professionally as a 3D character animator on feature films, and with this position, inspire audiences around the world with films as impactful as the ones I have grown with.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?

Putting yourself out there creatively, regardless of what stage you are in on your artistic journey, is invaluable in achieving your dreams. After entering SCAD and beginning to learn animation, I also learned from peers and professors to share my work online. So, I began doing so. From sharing process videos to final projects and demo reels, I continued to share and explain my projects on social media, namely on services like LinkedIn. As social media is an incredible connector of creatives, using social media to network with industry professionals and fellow artists is also an immensely helpful boost in your journey. Finally, remaining consistent and up to date with posting on social media platforms allows your audience to stay engaged and observe your progress over time. Overall, by posting a variety of artwork, networking with others, and constantly engaging through different platforms, social media has opened the door to innumerous opportunities for me and has propelled me closer to achieving my goals.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

The greatest part of being an artist is having the ability to bring my passions, inspirations, and imagination to life. Through creative expression, whether through drawing, painting, or animating, the opportunity to make my ideas into reality is truly magic and has excited me through each project I have completed. Even more so, having the ability to use my artistic skills to powerfully inspire and connect others through visual storytelling is an opportunity that I will forever be amazed and grateful for.
