We were lucky to catch up with Makena Delaney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Makena, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think it takes to be successful?
So can we just take a moment to appreciate the wild ride of being a small business owner? It’s like being on a roller coaster, except you’re also trying to juggle flaming torches and bake a soufflé at the same time. 😂 Hats off to everyone doing it successfully because DANG it can be a challenge! I personally feel like being a lifelong learner is the true key to success. In fact, I’m kinda obsessed with learning new stuff. I swear, my brain is like a sponge in an ocean of knowledge – it just can’t get enough! And, because of my philosophy on learning, I always feel confident when the time comes that I need to learn a new skill! It’s never truly a point of fear for me; procrastination, yes, but never fear!

Makena, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey! I’m Makena Delaney, owner of The Carlyle Creative! I’m super stoked about helping entrepreneurs find their vibe and voice. It’s all about that brand sparkle, you know? And hey, we don’t just talk the talk; we walk the walk with our top-notch brand and website design services.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Networking! Ask anyone around town! I’m a local networking queen- it’s rare that I go somewhere where I don’t see someone I know! Which, as a true introvert used to be a super challenge for me! But now I love catching up with people I know outside of networking events. And more importantly, I love making new friends! I’ve met some of the coolest women and future prospects at local networking events. There’s nothing better than helping someone shape their dream from the get-go.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
“Buy Back Your Time” by Dan Martell is a game-changer. It’s like finding the cheat code to business level-upping. Delegation is the name of the game, and this book is my playbook. It was recommended to me by a friend and I just love that the entire book is actionable! So often, books aren’t geared toward someone with a small contracted team; it’s usually corporate mumbo jumbo that we have to translate to fit our business model- but not this book! It gives you action steps bit by bit to help you master delegation and buy back your time.
