We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Makeda Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Makeda below.
Makeda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
As a young girl, my passion for art was undeniable. My parents still fondly recall the days of constantly repainting the walls because of my drawings—a testament to my early creativity. I filled notebooks with mini comics, eagerly sharing them with friends at school. Soon, my comics became a trend, inspiring others to create their own stories. It was a proud moment to see my hobby evolve into something that sparked creativity in others.
Art was more than just a subject in school; it was my driving force. I eagerly seized any opportunity for artistic projects, finding joy in each creative endeavor. This passion guided me through primary and high school, ultimately leading me to pursue an art career in college.
Throughout my life, I’ve grappled with inner struggles and anxiety, but art has been my solace. It provided a constructive outlet for my emotions and allowed me to explore my identity and psyche. Art isn’t just a career for me; it’s a journey of personal growth and self-discovery.
In essence, art has been my constant companion, helping me navigate life’s challenges and express myself authentically. I embrace it wholeheartedly and am grateful for the opportunity to pursue it professionally!

Makeda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Makeda Smith, and I am a Comic Book Artist and Illustrator from The Bahamas. Growing up in this vibrant cultural landscape deeply influenced my artistic identity, shaping the way I perceive and express myself creatively.
Art, for me, is the most eloquent language I know—a medium through which I can craft dreamlike narratives with ethereal visuals. Drawing inspiration from both traditional Bahamian crafts and digital techniques, I have developed a soft, rococo, and art nouveau-inspired art style. This style allows me to infuse a whimsical, feminine touch into my work, which often revolves around the subject of the female experience.
I am endlessly fascinated by the complexities of the female experience, and I strive to uncover new insights through imagery and symbolism in my comics and illustrations. Inspired by the audacity and imagination of the Surrealist movement, I integrate their ideas and principles into my creative process.
When it comes to collaborating on projects, communication is key for me. I believe in maintaining open and consistent dialogue with clients to ensure that their vision is realized while also allowing room for artistic interpretation and innovation.
In addition to my artistic pursuits, I am a lifelong learner who finds inspiration in a wide range of subjects. Whether it’s art, film, fashion, literature, or world history, I am always eager to absorb new information and perspectives. This continuous exploration not only enriches my artistic practice but also enhances my personal growth and understanding of the world around me.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Breaking the stigma that “artists don’t make money” would greatly benefit artists worldwide. Many potential artists may shy away from pursuing art careers due to fears of instability. Yet, art permeates daily life, from video games to movies to fashion, showcasing the ubiquity and value of artistic expression. To nurture a flourishing creative ecosystem, society must recognize the importance of artists and invest in their work.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most fulfilling aspect of being an artist lies in the ability to express oneself authentically and share personal narratives and emotions through creative endeavors. Crafting art enables a unique form of vulnerability, allowing me to communicate my innermost thoughts, feelings, and perspectives in a deeply intimate manner. By infusing elements from my life, such as characters, themes, and symbols, I imbue my work with layers of significance, forging deeper connections with my audience. Moreover, the process of sharing my art with others and receiving their feedback and appreciation is immensely gratifying, fostering a profound sense of validation and connection. Ultimately, the opportunity to create and share art as a reflection of my identity is a deeply rewarding experience, both for myself and for fellow artists.
