We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MaKaylah Meredith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MaKaylah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have an upcoming single called “Careful” that I wanted to share with all of my followers! This project is so important to me because depending on how this record is received it could potentially open more doors for me and my music career. I wrote this song “Careful” after a 6-year-long relationship went sour and instead of looking at my breakup negatively, I managed to flip the narrative into something that can be deemed as positive and a lesson learned. I know that my story is not unique to only me, as I know many of my listeners/ followers have gone through similar experiences. I made this relatable record for not only myself but for my listeners who have experienced heartbreak just as I have. This song talks about a combination of fear; faith and the risks that come with being vulnerable enough to receive and to give love again. I had the opportunity to work with music producer JSH B who recorded and mixed this record at the Funky Dope Music Compound where several popular artists such as: (Sexyy Red, Luh Kel, Miistro Freeyo) and others have recorded hit records. This song and collaboration was made possible by DJ King Ked and the beat/ music was created/ engineered by Orlando Ruffin. Careful is worth listening to and will be available on all streaming platforms on September 17, 2024!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an (artist) singer/songwriter and music artist based in St. Louis Missouri where I was born and raised. I have been making music since 2019 when I wrote my first single “Know”. Since then I have created many records but could not settle on a specific genre causing me to delete my entire discography and start over from scratch. I have taken the time to realize that I don’t belong in a box and from here on out I will not force myself into one. The industry is so cutthroat, but I do what I do (Make Music) because It brings me so much joy! The main reason I got into creating music is because I feel more like myself when I am doing so. Music is life and it is so universal that it connects people from different cultures and backgrounds. Music to me is not only how something sounds, but it is also how a record makes the audience feel. Music is my journal that I allow my listeners and followers to experience with me. I want my potential listeners and people who aren’t familiar with me yet to know that plan to create relatable music that they can connect with and enjoy. I take my time to listen to all of my followers and supporters and plan to be consistent with dropping more sounds! With your support we are unstoppable and we can reach heights unimaginable because what we create will hold power.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
My new single “Careful” highlights how difficult love can be and the risk it takes to allow yourself to be loved and to love again after heartbreak and betrayal. Something I had to learn is that sometimes people can’t receive the type of love you (I) try to offer them and THAT is OKAY! I had to unlearn the idea that my happiness and joy are rooted in a single individual and had to teach myself how to love “me” again. I had to unlearn unhealthy coping mechanisms and had to teach myself healthier habits that will be beneficial for me and my partner in my next relationship. I had to learn how to depend on God through each hardship I faced because I found out that I simply could/can not do this life on my own. I had to learn what peace and joy look like and after deciding to love myself I learned that I can now receive love again.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
To all of the non-creatives, it would be beneficial for you all to share and interact with our (creatives) work! It takes a lot of time and effort to create something that you like and could benefit from, so what I will ask my supporters to do is share share share and add “Careful” to your playlist when it drops on September 17th. When you stream “Careful” it essentially allows the algorithm on your favorite streaming platform (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) to create personalized music experiences for their uses. When you stream “Careful” it will be an incentive for me to create more music for you all! Word of mouth goes a long way and when you share and interact with my work you become a part of my team! When you share our (Creatives) work it gives another person incentive to share our work as well! It is very encouraging for us (Creatives) when we see that you enjoy what we do! Be just as loud in supporting us/me as you are for more established artists/creatives. Remember that we (Creatives) can NOT achieve our goals without you!
