Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Makayla Paige. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Makayla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
Most hairstylist don’t believe in being personable with there clients. We’re taught that it’s unprofessional but in my chair it is home and for that reason my clients keep coming back. I’ve literally had women I just met ask to hug me after their appointment or as they’d say their therapy session. Most women, moms, teens, wives, daughters don’t really have a safe space to just open up and release so I allow them a space for that. I love what I do & how I carry my business because I know many can say that Makayla or Paige (as they call me) is the women that inspired me to be a better me internally while rocking my curls and feeling beautiful externally. Im thankful to be an aid in better mental health because it’s vital for us to live happily & healthy.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Makayla Paige. I’ve been doing hair since I was 14. I’ve worked in many shops growing up as the shampoo girl and with that experience i learned early the challenge of working with women and different personalities. Also how important customer service is. What sets my business apart from many is I make all my clients apart of my family. It’s important for me to know my clients and be an open ear to anyone who’s hurting or want to even share exciting news or maybe vent about work, life etc. Most of my clients come to me to simply talk about their daily struggles. That has been a huge drive of my business clientele; being personable & friendly. I am now 25 and a salon owner. I specialize in natural hair and I’m most known for my silky silk presses. I also have a hair growth line called Paige’s Hair Healer made for men and women helping aid in growth in the hair and the beard. I want people to know you’re welcome with open arms and in for a great & professional experience.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Honestly the major key to building your audience is making post on knowledge you know and ring lights changed the game lol or even natural lighting. Use hashtags of what you do and your city! That’s literally what brought people in. Most importantly post daily!

Have you ever had to pivot?
This is actually funny. I almost moved to Atlanta, GA to start all over. I’d travel there and stay a week to work in a shop at a temporary travel booth but all signs pointed me back to Michigan. I even had a girl in the Detroit airport flag me down and say “omg I follow your Instagram I can’t wait to book you soon!” As I was on the way to Atlanta. Then when I came back that same week the store clerk at this boutique recognized my name from my hair page. I even started my own clothing boutique online because my vision was so blurry on what I wanted to do. Then a week later I got a call about the opportunity of owning my own shop. That was the best thing that could’ve happened to me. So here I am still in Michigan (Farmington Hills) serving my girls in my hometown. I’m super grateful!
