We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Makayla Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Makayla below.
Makayla, appreciate you joining us today. One deeply underappreciated facet of entrepreneurship is the kind of crazy stuff we have to deal with as business owners. Sometimes it’s crazy positive sometimes it’s crazy negative, but crazy experiences unite entrepreneurs regardless of industry. Can you share a crazy story with our readers?
Off the top of my head, the craziest thing that has happened to me in my business was just last year. I was booked for my first bridal shower and I got there early like so do with all my bookings. As I’m getting setup, I realize I don’t have a single SD Card on me. And I usually do pretty well with having multiple on me. So I had to leave and speed to the closest CVS and get whatever SD Cards they had. And I bought two just to be safe and sped back to the function. I felt so much embarrassment within myself even though no one knew what was going on. Thankfully I was early so everything ran smoothly after that. But it was definitely a big moment of panic.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the industry by shooting just about anything on campus my freshman year of college. I now specialize in portrait style photography. I like to be very collaborative with my clients so they get out of it what they were expecting, but so also give the best advice and encouragement I can to produce something I’m personally proud of as well. One thing I would want future clients to know about me is that I treat them the way I would want to be treated if I was booking a service. I think that’s what matters most in any business, respect and communication on both sides.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time where is really had to pivot in my business was when I lost all of my editing presets when rebooting my computer. They made editing so easy and had my own style to them. So when I lost them I think so lost my crutch in a sense, so I had to start from scratch with every shoot I had to edit moving forward. It taught me to always stay on my toes and fresh when it comes to editing because it’s one of the most essential parts of the whole process. Never get too comfortable.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of clients for me has been referrals from pass clients or friends. That’s why it’s so important to always give the best experience no matter who it is. You never know who someone knows. So referrals are very underrated because you could be one referral away from your big break
