We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Makayla Holloran. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Makayla below.
Makayla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
This summer I was given the opportunity to intern at Harborside Christian Church (my home church), as a Photography and Marketing Intern. What I took out of this internship, with Harborside, was how to be the best version of myself and how to be a strong, respectable leader in all areas of my life. Something my pastor taught over this past summer that truly stuck with me and has shaped my viewpoint on life itself, is when he said our number one goal isn’t the task(s) we are given, but rather people. What he meant by that was we are in charge of seeing, helping, and listening to every person who stepped foot inside our church and he even encouraged us to do the same in our lives outside of church. He said our goal isn’t to complete mere tasks we are given, our goal is to connect with people, and then, eventually, connect people to God. A thought that greatly impacted and inspired me. Once the internship came to an end in late July (2024), I have strived to see, help, and listen to every person I have the pleasure of meeting; for God not only died, rose again, and forgave my sins, but He also did so for each, and every person in the world. That being said, as a photographer and videographer my goal for each session, is to impart my newfound goal of seeing, helping, and listening to all my clients. At 7Angles Photography, I strive for excellence, professionalism, compassion, and faith to shine within my small business and in every interaction with my lovely clients.

Makayla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello everyone, my name is Makayla Holloran–a 22-year-old, Photographer & Videographer at 7Angles Photography. I was born in Bellingham, Washington then when I was 1, moved to a small town in Michigan called Holland. My passion for the art of taking photos and videos bloomed at the young age of 14 when I got my first hand-me-down iPhone from my grandpa! From the moment I got that small iPhone everywhere I went, I took photos and videos. Anything and everything that I thought was beautiful (which is a lot of things), was captured on my small, little iPhone 4. I quickly began to notice, that with every captured moment my passion for creating grew. Fast forward to early 2020, the year we all dread. Covid. Death. Fear. Not a fun time. My passion for creating still burned within me, but I couldn’t go out anywhere or do anything, so I took it upon myself to fill my time with other hobbies like writing, sketching, painting, binge-watching TV shows and movie series (where my StarWars Fans at??), and it was great for a while, but I began to miss taking photos and videos. At this point, there had been many conversations between my dad and me about potentially moving closer to his side of the family, in Florida. A very exciting plan indeed, for I had grown up visiting them in Florida, and had fallen in love with the place! My father and I ended up moving to Florida in April of 2020 (so still during all the crazy), right after I graduated from High School. I was sadly, a covid senior, so never got to walk the stage or throw my cap in the air, but at that time in my life I didn’t care, all I wanted was to move to Florida as soon as possible. Fast forward again, to 2023 at this time in my life, I was a Barista at a small cafe that my church owned, still didn’t have a camera just my good ol’ iPhone. Still capturing away wherever I go, with my passion for it ever-present. Then, through that Barista job, I met a very nice young couple who so graciously gave me two Sony cameras and all the equipment I could ever need to make my dream of being a professional photographer & videographer come true! The rest is history. I have been using those cameras ever since then to create, create, create and I have never been happier!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission and goal for my small business 7Angles Photography, is to help get my client’s stories heard and seen through creative visual storytelling. When capturing moments in time, I want to inspire and connect with my clients to ensure the best outcome for their desired shoot style, as well as my own. With each session, I hope to grow interpersonal relationships with not only my clients but also with the people who view my work across all my social media platforms. My end goal is always to unify people to people and people to God.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
When a resource isn’t readily available to me, the thing I have learned to do through my career is to ask others for help. There may be times when it seems like you do not have all the resources you need to accomplish a goal or task set before you, but if you simply slow down and ask for help from those you trust, you will find that you have all the resources you need. Ask questions. It’s okay to ask for help. There was a time when I was too afraid to ask for help, but once you get out of your comfort zone and begin to ask those around you for help, all else will fall in line. If you do not have a specific object that could aid you in a photoshoot, just ask a friend if they have any spares of the item you need, trust me, they will most likely lend it to you with no cost at all. That’s why being personable with others is key in any line of work. Remember your resource is God, not just people. Anything is possible through Christ.
