Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Makayla Douglas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Makayla, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I believe my parents have helped guide me to being the person I am today. They have always influenced me to not be afraid of pursuing any thought I’ve had in my mind, especially when it comes to my career. My parents always tells me to take my time when making decisions with any category in my life but to jump after it if your passionate about it, because you never want to look back and wonder what could have been. And for that I’m deeply grateful for because it has lead me to go after a lot of my goals I have within my career.

Makayla, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Makayla Douglas, I am a licensed Aesthetician going on 3 years now. I went to Aveda institute in 2021 here in Nashville to pursue my love for the beauty industry. Growing up I always loved all things self care down to skincare, makeup, hair removal, etc. I would always practice makeup overs on my family when I was younger but never had the thought that I would be pursuing it as a career years down the line. What lead me down this path was experiencing acne in middle and high school, I would experiment with tons of different products, I did extensive research of ingredients to find what could help me get rid of my acne and through many trails and error I finally found a solution. When I started seeing significant changes within my skin I figured why not help others feel more confident with their skin, and thats when I made the decision that being an esthetician and helping clients with not only their skin but enhancing their beauty overall was something that I wanted to do as a career.
I work at a Salon in Nolensville TN, named Cala Salon. There I offer full body waxing, customized facials with add on treatments such as dermaplaning, and chemical peels, brow laminations, lash lifts and tints, and body treatments. When coming to me I strive to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible with expressing their concerns so I can help them reach their desired look.
I am extremely proud of how far I’ve come from the beginning of my career to now. It’s amazing seeing growth within yourself and career. And there’s nothing better than getting to experience the reaction of a satisfied client that turns into a great friend on that journey you guys have together and helping them feel like the best version of themself.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was to never dwell on the past. We all make mistakes as services providers and even in our everyday life. While in school at Aveda I was practicing on my sister and I waxed off half her eyebrow. I freaked out and felt so bad! But she was very understanding and told me you realize your mistake, move on and fix what you did wrong. For awhile after that incident I still felt nervous to do her brows since then because I didn’t want a repeat of what happened but doing so I became super cautious would overthink the whole process. This caused me to do my best work because I was so in my head and then I realized I needed to trust myself and let go of that one accident that helped.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back I would still choose the same profession. Self care will never go out of style. I believe everyone deserves to be pampered and elevated to feel their best, because when you look good, you’ll feel good, and you’ll do good at your highest potential.
