We recently connected with Makai C. and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Makai thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Sooner. Starting my career at 18 was a wise choice but if I would’ve known what it was capable of I would’ve taken myself seriously a few years prior while I was still attending school. Other than that would recommend anyone find their calling and their gift early in life, chase it don’t let anyone tell you diffrent, monetize it for your family and your God.
Makai, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Am a 21 yr old music producer from Cali. Found my calling in high school and now I work full-time round the clock building everyday. Am not one that believes in extended breaks (currently at 21yrs old) everyday whether the feeling is there or not I pray and try to create something of substance.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Starting out making beats had watched a lot of YouTube tutorials and live cookups which while they help to get a beginner understanding of the sound I had to unlearn a lot of those habits that were picked up off those videos. In order to find the sound that I was trying to achieve I took YouTube out of my inspiration cycle and when “beat-block” would occur early on I’d listen to different genres of music whether EDM, Orchestral Classics, Oldies, RnB etc or even studying albums which sounds had inspired me to begin with. Wrld on Drugs, EVOL, The Wzrd, DS2 etc.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Maintaining creativity especially of faith based. Is just as hard as working a normal 9-5. Whether behind a computer or building a house the amount of brain power and cognitive work it takes to be consistent and creative is one that even with my small experience in the work force has proved 100x more taxing mentally than I would have imagined.
