We recently connected with Majorie Dorismond and have shared our conversation below.
Majorie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I came up with the name of my company from my Second Book (#SpeakFreely). How did I come up with the name #SpeakFreely? One early morning on January 8th 2018 I was walking out my front door to go to the airport and (God) spoke to me and said #SpeakFreely. After getting out of jail the last time on April 9th 2018 I’ve asked myself what will I name my second book. Boom, God said #SpeakFreely. Three months later April 24th 2018 I Self Published my second Poetry book #SpeakFreely. Months after, September 8th 2018 I started my own Clothing Line (#SpeakFreely the Brand).
Majorie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What’s up y’all? I’m back. Lol. It’s Majorie Dorismond. But I go by my Artist name, Maj D. Yeap that’s me. Nationality; Haitian American.
Let’s get started. Well, I’m a Actress, Author and CEO of (#SpeakFreely the Brand) Clothing Line. I am originally from Miami, Fl but resides in Atlanta, Ga.
How did I get to Atlanta, Ga after graduating from Miami Dade College with my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice? Honestly, I asked God to moved me here to pursue my Dreams as a Poet/Writer. While writing and preparing to Self Publish my first Poetry Book (This is She, Me… Majorie) God brought back to my memory that I wanted to become an Actress since forever. So, since I’ve been here in Atlanta I’ve been in numerous backgrounds acting on Tv shows and Movies. And also I’ve landed a part in two Independent Films. Both featured on Amazon Prime. Movie – Sticky Situation and Tv Web Series – Reckless. Check them out.
Moving forward, #SpeakFreely the Brand was named after my Second Poetry Book. My other visuals are #BeYouFreely, #CryFreely on Infant Onesies and #BarkFreely on Puppy/Dog shirts. My brand has something for the whole family to look Fly in.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Even right now my business is Pivoting. Things are still tough. But I see Growth in my sales and in my customers are growing Tremendously. Business has made a major turn around. At one point I never got sales on Large or barely Mediums. Now I get up to 2 XL on sales. That makes my heart smile. After working so hard and for so long. Almost 4 years later I see my business is growing.
Never giving up got me to where I am now. And I’m so Grateful for all those who supports me.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
This is a great question. And I’ll be glad to answer how I sell my merchandise. Honestly I’m old school; I go out myself to sell my merchandise and products. Normally I’m set up in Decatur, Georgia. Being mobile has now allowed me more freedom to attend a variety of local pop up shops and to personally deliver my products . Both of my books are personally autographed and sold on Amazon as well.
Going out promoting myself so that people can meet the authentic me (Maj). Customer interaction allows me to share my testimony, build a solid clientele and I personally believe customers purchasing from the actual CEO is pretty cool.
Start Small until your project becomes Big!
Keep Going even when things don’t look like it’s moving.
