Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maiya Michelle. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maiya , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Any thoughts around creating more inclusive workplaces?
The creative industry can be very isolating at times. When I think of creating spaces more inclusive for everyone, this bought back some memories. Starting in photography or any creative career we all go through the overlooked stage of our career, everyone does not fully believe in our vision and the kind of life we want to create for ourselves. Many people will think that because you’re not at the same level as them, you cannot amount to the greatness they have achieved. This is untrue thinking of those memories reminded me of how much I’ve been overlooked as well. I uphold myself to a standard that doesn’t exclude anyone. I believe that if you have good work then it doesn’t matter what level you are at because we all had to start somewhere. We all needed that push and the support to keep going. We as a community and industry need to break away from this ” I can do bad all by myself” mindset. That limits you from so much when you believe you can do everything along your journey by yourself. A team and people you can count on are important. As I’ve been growing throughout my journey, I have gratitude towards the people who have helped me along the way. Understanding the ability to look past the frustrating and disheartening parts of my creative career is what’s best for me. To allow me to be open to change for the betterment of myself and others in my community. It starts with letting go of the crab barrel idea and start building with the ones around us. This is how we are more inclusive in the workplace.

Maiya , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I give you visuals, you leave inspired. My mission is to inspire others to create and live in their truth in whatever their craft may be. I am a creative powerhouse, using my artistic abilities to create an experience you cannot get anywhere else. I am a photographer, creative director, stylist, director, model consultant, visionary, and many more. Never limited to one avenue of work and expanding on my craft. The abilities I have now I was doing simultaneously; I didn’t know at the time I was learning to perfect while still growing my photographic skills. I encourage my clients and models to expand on their ideas and to work with me to create something that catches the eye and changes their view. I am not your trendy photographer; I do not conform to one art style. One thing I am very proud of is the ability I have to make my art cohesive yet unique from each other. For any brand owner, I want to create a story that puts your brand and mission to the forefront, creating visuals that speak to your brand and your target audience. To touch on the service provided, I offer different packages tailored to different needs that range from business owners that need photos for your products or want to do campaigns. To models who need digitals and comp cards. Maybe you need guidance on how to get started in modeling. I also incorporate my creative direction skills into my package. If you’re looking to give your ideas a new life whether you’re shooting for birthdays or business reasons. I would love to work with you all to bring it to life!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get to do what I love most every time someone books with me. I am very blessed to say that I can walk in my truth and do something that makes me fulfilled. This life will throw so much at you, and it will make you want to take the easy way out and do things that bring down your energy. The point, many people are living a life of dissatisfaction because they gave up on their dreams and stopped believing. I ponder where I would be if I never took the leap of faith, what kind of life would I lead, and what would I be doing. I understand now that if I was to take another route, It would be me giving up on myself when I’m deserving of much more.
What’s so rewarding is that I get to use the gifts that God has given me. To create beauty in this world and ultimately change it as well. To hear people, speak about what my art makes them feel, other creatives I have connected with, and how we want to grow within our crafts. The way art makes me feel and how I’ve touched others’ lives, is the most rewarding experience of them all.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to continue to inspire and build a community that uplifts one another. I know I can bring something new and life-changing to many people. I know by continuing my work and being authentically me, it will happen. My mission is way bigger than me and I want people to be connected to it as much as I am. As the vision unfolds, I want others to picture themselves in it because this is for the betterment of us all not just me. Know that when you sit at a table with people who genuinely want you to do good, you’ll never go hungry. By all of us connecting and growing together you will be fulfilled in more ways than one. I leave you all with this, remember whatever you want can be achieved in this life, you have to work for it and never give up on yourself. We need you amid all this craziness. Your creativity, knowledge, wisdom, skills, and more. You have much to offer the key is to look within to find it.
