We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maison Jay. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maison below.
Alright, Maison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have been able to earn a full time living from my creative work. I was very difficult at first getting gigs here and there for a few hundred bucks but i realized the thousands of hours i put into my craft i needed to put into the business side of it . I started going out to the streets of miami filming my second do magic to people passing by and asked them to post me saying i was the #1 magician in miami and little by little i started gaining more and more recognition. Soon enough i started getting phone calls from several companies wanting me to perform for places like the hard rock and the miami heat. I definitely could have sped up the process if i knew the information i knew. one of the main things is knowing my value you and charging accordingly.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
i first started magic when i was 4 living in New York! fast forward to my mid 20s i started studying psychology, Nuero linguistic programming and hypnosis. leading to me to where i am now at age 31. I provide a very different style of mágica me mentalism i just don’t show up in a all black suit saying the same corny lines and doing the the same tricks as others magicians. When i arrive to a clients event , i dress according to the theme, and i will adapt my magic and create something that’s personal to that specific event. I am also proud of the fact i am will to push the limits of what magic and mentalism is! which is something most magicians are afraid of .
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
there was a point before my following and magic brand started to build traction where i was homeless living in my car. And I kept turning down the gigs that said i was charging too much (at the time $1000) until i got my first yes for the amount of $1000 and it created a domino effect more and more people were saying yes to my rate referring to their friends
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
so many people are stress from their day to day lives with their friends family finances and when they watch me perform for them they forget about all their stress even just for a moment. and in that moment they are filled with wonder and amazement as if they were a child again. That is the most rewarding feeling to me
