We recently connected with Mairin Van Shura and have shared our conversation below.

Mairin, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.

After an unfulfilling decade+ practicing law and experiencing worsening chronic health conditions as a result, I left the corporate rat race in pursuit of a more rewarding, free, purposeful life. Over the span of several months, I quit my law firm job that was destroying my soul, sold my house and 99% of my belongings, moved abroad, and started an online business to help other entrepreneurs. Leaving the comfort of a well-paying job, a town I knew and loved, friends, family, everything that was familiar…was a huge risk.

It has been incredibly challenging at times, but also, extremely rewarding to have such unparalleled freedom to live and travel as I wish, while helping business owners in more than 17 countries to date experience freedom in their business and lives via legal protection.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I’ve been a licensed attorney for over 15 years, helping entrepreneurs in varying capacities throughout my career. One of the primary reasons I started my business was to provide a way for online business owners to protect themselves and their businesses as quickly and painlessly as possible, without the overwhelm and high cost of hiring a lawyer. My business is called Solivagant Legal. For anyone unfamiliar with the word solivagant, it means solo wanderer, or someone who revels in traveling alone. For me, it seemed apt not only to describe myself, a solo traveler wandering the globe, but also the entrepreneur journey as a whole. For so many business owners, navigating starting and growing a business can feel like an overwhelming (but exciting!) solo trip without a GPS or a map. Or any direction whatsoever. I wanted to provide a vehicle through my business for online entrepreneurs to not only protect their businesses legally, but also to provide a wealth of free resources to help them feel safe, guided, and at peace.

I create customizable, fill-in-the-blank contract templates for business owners. I also provide custom legal services such as contract review and contract drafting, Power Hour calls for legal questions and audits, and trademark services. In addition, I have an all-in-one legal course which offers access to all of my contract templates, 1:1 calls with me, and modules teaching them business owners everything they need to know about starting and running a legal business, from forming an LLC to how to trademark, and everything in between.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

Expertise coupled with valuable, actionable content. I always want to share content and resources that are as helpful as possible. No fluff here!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

Perfectionism. As a straight A student and a lawyer trained to be extremely cautious and risk averse, entrepreneurship requires loosening the reigns, relinquishing some degree of control over outcomes, and while of course always being fastidious with details when it comes to legal documents, getting comfortable with “done is better than perfect” for certain aspects of my business.
