We were lucky to catch up with Mai Vang recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mai , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In 2020, I embarked on a weight loss journey and managed to shed 50lbs by 2022. As my confidence grew, I made a courageous decision to confront my fears and not allow them to hinder my progress. I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in modeling because, for too long, I had allowed others’ opinions of me to define who I was. Throughout my life, I had been labeled as the “fat” sister, cousin, friend, and daughter, constantly hearing that I would be considered beautiful if I were smaller.
In February 2022, I made a firm commitment to take modeling seriously, having overcome various traumatic relationships in the process. In a matter of weeks, I devoted myself to learning the ins and outs of the modeling industry – from perfecting my walk to understanding the expectations at casting calls, preparing for headshots, creating a compelling comp card, and knowing what to anticipate at auditions.
To my delight, my very first casting call resulted in a breakthrough. I landed a spot in Fashion Week MN’s prestigious Coalesce Collective show for spring 2022. This experience encouraged me to continuously push my boundaries and embrace new challenges. I adopted the philosophy of seizing every opportunity that came my way, regardless of any fear that might try to hold me back. I’ve learned to take risks, embrace the skin I’m in, and refuse to let fear become a roadblock in my journey.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a plus-sized model, standing at around 5’4″, and I don’t fit the typical mold for the modeling industry. Determined to succeed, I tirelessly researched what it takes to thrive in this field, understanding the kind of look designers seek during casting calls. It demands immense dedication, discipline, and personal investment. Throughout this challenging journey, staying resilient is crucial, as the industry can be unforgiving and demands a thick skin to thrive. People may always find something negative to say, but I know my true self, and I refuse to let their words affect me.
What sets me apart is that I am a self-taught, freelance model without any agency representation. My approach is purely business-oriented.
In September 2022, I founded Mai Business Inc. with the mission to support freelance models through teaching and mentoring, providing valuable insights into the modeling industry and its expectations. My services include assisting in the creation of professional comp cards and digital portfolios, as well as scouting models for upcoming shows and events in MN. My passion lies in empowering others, and I am dedicated to maintaining a positive and encouraging approach, even during life’s challenges.
My proudest achievement is staying authentic to who I am and being an inspiration to my daughter. By achieving and living my dreams, I aim to show her that she can accomplish her goals too. As a 36-year-old, single mother, and plus-sized model, I have executed my dreams and aspirations. Along the way, I’ve learned valuable lessons, which I’ve used to brand and market myself effectively.
To aspiring models, I would say, never let fear be an obstacle, and don’t allow a single “No” to discourage you in this industry. Stay determined, stay true to yourself, and keep pushing forward. Success is within reach, regardless of any challenges or setbacks you might face.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a creative artist, I find the most fulfilling aspect of my journey lies in igniting inspiration in everyone around me and spreading joy, happiness, and positivity to all those I encounter.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One aspect that non-creatives may find challenging to comprehend on my journey is the trials and tribulations I face as a model. There’s a common misconception that modeling immediately leads to substantial earnings, but that’s not how the industry operates. It requires significant self-investment to build a successful career. As a model, I understand the importance of viewing myself as a walking brand. The way I carry myself holds great significance, as I must consistently demonstrate dependability and maintain professionalism in all situations.
