Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mai Alina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mai, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Since I was little…I want to say around the age of 10-12, I knew I wanted to impact the world differently. I knew that whatever i ended up doing in life, I wanted it to be meaningful. My business focuses on natural beauty, skin, and body products. Everything is handmade as well and I genuinely enjoy what I do. The goal I had, was to release products that were free from harsh chemicals and 100% natural/ vegan friendly.

Mai, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my business at the age of 14 in 2018. When I first started out, I had only sold lipglosses and my business was formally known as ‘Nellabella Collection’. Soon enough I expanded into body products and then skin care. I changed the business name to ‘Maiiskiin’ and revamped because I wanted a difference in how I represented my business from when I first started. I also love the play on words, so Mai(pronounced like my) and skin, creates ‘my skin’. I knew I wanted to have my name in the business as well so Maiiskiin just worked so well. As time went on and my business grew, it did get more complicated with making my products while also promoting, editing the website ,etc. However I stayed focused on the goal I knew I had to achieve. Although I haven’t completely reached it yet, I am still grateful to everyone who has supported me over the years, especially my mother. My goal is to have Maiiskiin become a six figure business and widely known. I know with hard work, dedication, and patience, I WILL make it happen.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
‘The people you know will support you the most’ is something I had thought to be true. As it turns out, strangers are the number one supporters. I have my own theories on why that is but it took me awhile to realize that just because they are family or close friends, does not mean they will support you on your achievements.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I have my own website that I use to sell my products. For me, this was the best choice to be able to have full creative control on how potential costumers view my products. I am very precise on how I want things to look, so being able to design my site was just what I needed. I have thought about expanding to Amazon but that will take time.
