We recently connected with Maggie Vlasaty and have shared our conversation below.
Maggie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
As a kid I had a dream of pursuing acting and modeling, thanks mostly to Disney and my ability to sit and watch movies for long periods of time, but I don’t think it ever really dawned on me or my family that a career was a possibility. It wasn’t until 2021 that I finally started pursuing modeling part-time in Minnesota, and then it was late 2022 when my husband and I moved to Los Angeles that I was able to book jobs more regularly. Fast forward to March of 2023 and I’m now happily a full-time model and actress.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Of course! I entered the industry after many years of dreaming about pursuing modeling and acting as a career. I grew up watching America’s Next Top Model, Disney Channel, and typically being glued to the TV. In 2021 I began modeling and signed with a few agencies in Minneapolis, booking commercials, print work, TV, and runway. I got an opportunity to move to Los Angeles and grabbed it, and quickly started working more consistently in commercials, TV, films, and everything in between. In early 2023 I was able to make the confident decision to start doing the work full-time, as I was working with a creative agency full-time in addition to modeling part-time beforehand. I’m very happy with the decision, and while I did complete a college education in Sports Management and Product Design (almost opposite of what I do now!), I think it’s important to chase your dreams and put your effort into what you love.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The biggest thing that resided in my mind, as well as with the industry as a whole, is physical appearance: how you had to look a certain way in order to be successful in the industry. I think my resilience has shown that I was able to grow out of that mindset – and out of that industry standard, really – just by being confident in myself, understanding my worth, and knowing what I bring to the table. I’m very grateful to have strong skill sets in other areas, so when I feel as though my self-esteem is running low in regards to my physical appearance, I’m able to build up my confidence again by recalling all the skills and talents that I can bring to set.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I really enjoy making the director or client proud of something while we’re still on set: almost like that ‘aha’ moment, where they see what’s on the monitor and smile or laugh because of something that I was able to help create. I really like telling a story, especially when there isn’t necessarily a storyline: almost like I get to make something up to go with the campaign or shoot that I’m a part of.
