We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maggie Rintala. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maggie below.
Hi Maggie, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I regularly support my clients in slowing down and getting really clear about the deeper purpose driving the goals they are working toward. Working in a gym in Southern California it can be a real challenge to cut through the noise of “how to look perfect” and some people have to hit rock bottom before they will connect to their purpose.
One woman in particular was a full time working mom of three who had developed chronic pain and was gaining a lot of weight. Every diet or exercise program she started ended in frustration because she didn’t have the time, energy or capacity to maintain the strict rules. When we first started working together she was a bundle of stress and believed she would never “succeed”. Once we dialed in that her purpose was more about having energy for her family than just simply loosing weight the rushing slowed.
Being connected to her purpose made it easier for her to begin to enjoy movements, instead of using exercise to achieve a number on the scale. Enjoying moving gave her more energy, to do the healing she needed to be free of the chronic pain and within three months she had the capacity to take her children on their first family camp out, which in her words, “was more rewarding than any weight she had ever lost.”
My favorite part of the story is that this mom did loose the weight, but she never said anything about it, because once she slowed down and connected to her purpose, the weight didn’t matter.

Maggie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I move people towards themselves
There are so many ways to authentically connect to movement and still so many of us find ourselves challenged to connect to our body and spirit on a regular basis.
After a career as a professional dancer, I traveled the country teaching dance and eventually became a personal trainer. When I became a mother, for the first time in my life, I was faced with chronic pain, mysterious illness and depression.
Through my own healing journey, I had to relearn how to connect with my body, my creativity and my spirit. I not only found joy in movement again but I learned to trust the intuitive wisdom that lives in the body.
I have helped hundreds of clients also experience freedom, vitality and confidence that extends far beyond their fitness journey and touches all aspects of their lives. It is possible to feel alive and energized through movement and I would love to guide you on your journey towards joy and freedom I call it Fitness that Moves You.
I approach each session training session with the eyes of a technician, the heart of a dancer and the mind of a coach.
We begin with an extensive DNS movement evaluation assessing the current synergy of the global movement pattern. Once I have a clear picture of how you move and what you are hoping to accomplish, I create a program that addresses incomplete movement strategies and builds capacity with developmental movement and holistic foundational fitness philosophy.
.
My clients want to:
Free yourself from the gym to discover how you truly are meant to move.
Stop chasing fitness with ideas of what exercise should be and learn how to listen to your body.
I consistently:
Embody joy, lightness, and trust as I guide fitness enthusiasts and people with bodies to discover and challenge their own unique pathways to well-being.
FEELING GOOD IN YOUR BODY IS POSSIBLE
This is what I want for you:
Awareness. You can trust your body. Who you are and what you want matters.
Stability. Having a base of support in body and mind is primary to moving forward
Expansion. You have pushed your limits and you know what you can do.
Connection. You can be fully alive in your body and do anything you choose.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absofreakinglutely!!!
My teachers in elementary school always said, “she won’t sit still and she talks a lot”, and now I make a living moving around and talking.
One of the greatest gifts of my unconventional and unsettled youth is that I followed my heart and skillset to create several careers in the movement and spirituality spaces.
There is a singular joy to creating a career and building a business around one aspect of life and finding out that it simply pulls the tread of the universe. Everything is truly connected and working and learning so hard in this field has proven that to me.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I have stayed true to my initial desires/goals and passions for pursuing my chosen industry. People come to me because I am different, authentic and I do not try to fit in. I am very confident that my approach will work and I never try to be something I am not.
From the very start of my dance and movement coaching careers as well as integrating my spiritual practices, I have heard the message, “This won’t work”, and to this day my clients and students reflect to me that they sought me out because I work in a unique way and they need something different.
