We recently connected with Magely Martinez and have shared our conversation below.
Magely, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
Honestly, there have been many kind people when I started off my career that helped me jumpstart to where I am now! So many kind acts were done towards me, but I would say the top was having high-end artists and ones that have been in the field for a long time take a chance on me and had me work with them. I’m pretty sure they’ve all been in my shoes before, but I have always hoped they can genuinely know how much I appreciate that as somebody who was starting out, not so confident in her skills yet, but full of big dreams is grateful for such an opportunity like that one and still let me continue to work with them to this day! Another reason why I also think they let me work with them is their mindset of community over competition. These artist didn’t believe that I was going to steal their future clients or anything like that rather they saw it as an act of kindness to help me in my career. I think the best thing too is they get to see how I grow, become more confident in my skills, and become a better artist thanks to them. I guess also within that same area I would add on by saying one of the other, most kindest things that has been done for me was having clients also take a chance on me when they knew I was barely starting off. I am a big words of affirmation person and by them saying that they felt confident and beautiful with the looks I would give them helped reassure me that what I’m doing is good and right. Not to mention when they would post their looks to share with others and also give me a tip. I don’t know about you, but I feel like as an artist when we get tipped, it shows they very much love the services we give them!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I like to be known as an artist who is versatile, communicative, and passionate. I work in different mediums, such as productions, photoshoots, weddings, and events. The type of makeup and hair that I do ranges from natural, soft glam , camera ready, to special effects! I think all of my clients have seen how much care I have for them and the care for the work that I do. I very much pay attention to what my clients feel comfortable in. For example, most clients that I have, have had either bad experiences when they don’t feel like themselves or when they feel like they weren’t heard out and that’s what I love to do! I love to hear my clients out and let them feel like themselves when they hire me. I want to make sure their experience is good especially when they’re going to be in my chair for a while and I have to physically be close to them. Nothing feels better than being all glammed up and still feel like your best self. One other way I was taught to work was to adapt as I go. For example, those that work in photoshoots and productions know things can change all of a sudden and there’s no guarantee we’ll stick to the original plan. Another example is when I was working on a music video in LA and I made sure with the producers I had enough time to do the music artists’ makeup. Unfortunately, one of them got caught in bad traffic and I only had 20 minutes to do her makeup and knowing what I do, and trying to understand what the music artist wanted me to create, I was able to surprise her with the makeup that I did – the photographer that shared some BTS with us even shocked me with how well everything came out looking!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
To be honest, I’m not sure if this is proof of resilience, but I have definitely been told many times by both family and friends that I need to learn how to rest because I end up working too much ha ha! One cool thing about that, though is being able to look back and think ,”Wow I really did that!” There was one time I had a packed weekend where I had to go back home to Bakersfield to celebrate my little brother‘s college graduation and leave before 4 am to go back to San Diego and work on a Ted Talk with some amazing speakers, go back home to Escondido to pack for a trip that I had, after an hour of packing head straight to the airport to go to my trip to Guadalajara. I was able to accomplish all that in two days. During the season of fall is usually when I’m at my busiest, busy enough that I’ve had a friend of mine tell me he missed “when I was poor” because I used to have more time to hang out with them. A lot of times I’m pretty nonstop when it comes to what I do, but in the end, it’s all worth seeing what I’m able to create!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Speaking of friends and family telling me to slow down I have slowly been learning to undo my “rest is for the weak” mindset. I grew up in a family where if you were caught sitting down, you weren’t working and if you weren’t you weren’t doing anything with your life. That stayed with me all through my life working and in school. All that came with consequences of not knowing how to say no, letting people walk over me, and loving my work more than myself. As mentioned, it’s still a work in progress, but I am slowly learning to care of my well-being more and not turn my career into an idol. It’s so important to love yourself enough to learn when to rest, do the things that you love, and spend time with the people that you love.
