Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Magely Martinez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Magely, appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
Just like any business, it started with high hopes with no path. Little did I know doing makeup wasn’t just going to be like a regular job, where I show up to work then leave.
It started with the love of creating stories with makeup- just like big shows like Daredevil. I never knew there was a whole business side to it! I began by looking for gigs by word of mouth and asking around any creative how they charge and why, but of course every creative charges differently. I thought as long as someone hires me and hears about me then more work will come. I just started looking for gigs after I graduated college back in 2019 and of course, as soon as the pandemic hit, any job I had was canceled which made it difficult to pursue the career I wanted.
There was a difficult time when the pandemic was slowly starting to lift too and there were still no gigs for a beginner artist like me, so it made me look towards a different career. It wasn’t until I reached out to one of my now teachers asking her how I can go about working with makeup, even if it was an over-the-counter kind of job. She told me to check out this school her and her business partner started.
I went one day to check it out and be a model for them and something about it felt right. The kindness they brought, how they went about applying makeup, the environment, and after discussing it with the both of them- it seemed like learning makeup, hair, and business at Alchemy Beauty Academy was the right place for me.
After graduating in April 2022, that’s when the real business transition started. I got the education, skills, and experience and I was becoming a business woman. It took quite the courage and encouragement from those around me but every other month I started to add on factors creating a logo, business cards, business license, insurance, and so on. I take in every day as a lesson- to be a better artist and a business woman. It’s exciting to see how far I’ve come and learned and I truly can’t wait how much I can achieve, thanks to those supporting me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a makeup and hair artist for productions, photoshoots, and weddings. I am a mobile artist who works in Southern California and stationed in San Diego.
The beauty of what I do- especially working in production is having the ability of being versatile. I range from beauty makeup to special effects. It’s great to demonstrate the work I’ve done and to get reactions like “I love how you brought out my eyes. I look so pretty!” and, “Oh my gosh, that’s so gross but so cool!”
That’s what I would definitely be most proud of because one of my goals was to be versatile and good at it too. Recently I had a bridal trial for a future bride and something she told me was one of the biggest reasons she chose me was because I had versatility, aside from special effects, she appreciated seeing I was able to do different looks on lots of different faces.
One of the most rewarding feelings though is having positive reactions from clients- to see them happy and hear that they don’t want to take their makeup off, send pictures, or share how they look like on social media.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
One thing I know has helped me is kindness and caring for my clients. As cheesy as it sounds it does matter. Many people can tell when someone is being genuine or not but having the ability to truly care and listen to the client’s needs is what has helped me establish a business based on what a client desires. From the beginning I always cared about what a client envisions and it can be the look of a character or a style someone wants for their photos.
I love building relationships with clients from the moment they sit in my chair. Communicating and getting to know them is key to creating a connection. As I go about with applying their look, asking them questions on how they feel about their makeup and hair applications has demonstrated I want them to leave feeling happy and confident.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
From the beginning my goal is to create and share good and impactful stories. I had a taste of that myself growing up with movies that left me leaving the theater inspired and hopeful. It’s what sparked my desire to work in productions but the desire to create impactful stories came from my university where sharing stories filled the good and truth is a important as artists to do.
