We recently connected with Maeve Higgins and have shared our conversation below.
Maeve, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned through the best teachers and mentors! If I could go back in time, the only thing I would change would be learning to play instruments sooner, and learning to produce sooner. Some of the obstacles that stood in my way was simply the gate-kept information on how to produce when you are a teenager with no money trying their best to create music. I was so close to figuring out how to use MIDI, for example, when I was around 13, but got mislead by some guitarists who taught me I should record my piano as audio rather than as MIDI. Instead of using an audio interface and recording MIDI, I was told to record the song out of the headphone jack. If you know anything about piano, you’d know it is best recorded and used as MIDI when producing for flexibility. If I could go back in time, I would teach myself how to use a DAW and use MIDI with my DAW, but a lot of this information is hard to find for a first-time producer, or at least it was back when I first started learning! Nowadays there are youtube tutorials that explain the best ways to record piano to produce a song, but at the time, those resources weren’t as readily available to me

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My. name is MaeThePirate, I’m a composer, cellist, singer, recording engineer, and producer! I love to write music and record artists and perform locally around my city. What sets my music apart from others is definitely the lyrical content, and also the orchestral sound I tend to learn more towards. I work at a recording studio, and love to bring other’s visions to life as they create intricate stories and narratives. I like to write music about the darkest things we feel and experience in life, and try to turn them into positives

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people resonate or react to the music. When people see themselves in the stories and songs I write, it really feels like the art I make has purpose. I want to make everyone feel less alone, feel seen and included, and I think the most rewarding aspect of art is seeing it resonate with other people.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I think the best way to build a social media presence is by being real and true to yourself. So much of media nowadays is curated, edited, and faked to such a high degree that seeing some real genuine content can be a huge breath of fresh air. You attract your people by being really and truly yourself, there is no need to fake or pretend to be someone you’re not, as society nowadays, and I think all of us, crave authenticity in a world that is increasingly curated.
