Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Maegan Swabb. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Maegan, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Have I ever felt like tossing in the towel and becoming a Trader Joe’s bagging pro or a floral artist extraordinaire? Yep, I’ve been there! As the brains behind M. Swabb Interior Design Collective, I’ve danced with the idea of ditching the business owner hat for something a bit less intense. But you know what? Through positive vibes and a truckload of love for what I do, I’ve always managed to find my way back to the hustle, realizing how much value I bring to the table and the lives I touch.
Let me tell you, entrepreneurship isn’t for the weak. Sometimes, it’s more like a wild rollercoaster ride or a slap in the face you never saw coming. In those hair-pulling moments, I’ve seriously thought about switching lanes. Who wouldn’t want to craft bouquets or chat with their regulars in the grocery line? But then reality hits – those fleeting ideas were just escapist fantasies, not solutions to the challenges I faced.
:
Call it what you will, but positive manifestation is the secret sauce here. Instead of dwelling on problems, I’ve learned to focus on the good stuff, painting a mental picture of success. It’s like turning on a mental GPS that guides me even when I’m driving through the fog. By keeping my thoughts in check, I’ve managed to untangle knots I thought were unsolvable, and I’ve stumbled upon golden opportunities hiding in plain sight.
Despite the chaos, the reasons I fell head over heels for interior design and being a boss have never wavered. The thrill of transforming spaces, the joy of making lives more comfortable, and intentional, and the chance to splash creativity on every canvas – that’s my daily dose of purpose. Every time Ive felt lost, these passions light the way back to my true calling.
Being at the helm of M. Swabb isn’t just about me; it’s about being a change-maker. By giving budding talents in the design world a shot, I’m adding ripples to their career ponds.
Looking back, those moments of doubt and daydreams about the simpler life were like seasoning on this crazy adventure. They’ve spiced up my resilience, poured extra love into my work, and made me even more determined to keep rocking it. While bagging groceries or arranging blooms might still cross my mind, I’ve learned that my heart truly belongs to embracing challenges and rocking my purpose.
So, as I keep riding this M. Swabb rollercoaster, I know I’m more than just a boss – I’m a positivity ninja – even when I need to remind myself, I can choose to be a dream weaver, and a sprinkle of happiness in the world. With every challenge I conquer, every space I revamp, and every life I touch, I’m not just adding value – I’m adding irreplaceable, amazing value.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Through a challenging experience, I came to understand the necessity of restructuring our approach. Our client base posed a threat, as we observed design firms with streamlined processes and superior communication skills attracting and retaining clients.
In the ever-evolving landscape of interior design, staying relevant and successful requires more than just a static set of skills and knowledge. As an entrepreneur in the field, I have recognized the necessity of consistently unlearning and staying open to reprogramming myself in order to adapt to changing trends, technologies, and client preferences. This willingness to evolve has become the cornerstone of my interior design business, enabling me to provide exceptional services and create designs that resonate with both clients and the modern design world.
Unlearning is not about discarding all that we have learned but rather about shedding outdated practices, beliefs, and methodologies that no longer serve us in the rapidly changing industry. In my journey, I have realized that being open to unlearning allows me to break free from conventional norms and explore innovative ideas. By challenging the status quo, I have been able to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and adaptable to the evolving needs of clients.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Roughly 3.5 years ago, amidst the pandemic, I found myself in solitude. After nearly 8 years of consistency, I witnessed my staff dispersing to explore new job opportunities, relocate to different cities, or answer the call of family obligations. This transition was both daunting and somewhat bewildering, as I grappled with feelings of apprehension and astonishment. Yet, amid these emotions, a flicker of excitement emerged from within me, as if an inner voice was reassuring me that this experience was an integral part of my personal growth. It urged me to embrace the notion of letting go.
Reflecting on the subsequent years, I can’t claim that the journey has been flawless. More team members joined and departed, forming a continuous ebb and flow. However, that initial break served as a pivotal turning point, infusing me with the confidence to trust in my abilities. It reminded me that I possess the resilience to navigate through any challenges that cross my path.
