We recently connected with Maegan Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Maegan, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I absolutely love being a business owner and “being my own boss”. I love the freedom and flexibility it allows me and all the wonderful opportunities and doors it has opened. However , I would be lying if I said it never crossed my mind to go back to having a “regular” job. No one prepares you or warns you of what owning a business is really like, although it’ has a lot of perks to it I feel it is over glorified in todays world. They don’t warn you of really no days off , no paid vacations , sick time , someone offsetting the cost of health insurance and other insurance , 401 k and other benefits you can get from an employer. When Covid hit is when I really questioned was it all worth it. The salons were shut down for about three months with no way to make money. I wasn’t approved for any of the unemployment or other assistances offered during this time. I have two children to make sure are taken care of and thankfully my husband was essential so we didn’t go hungry. However it has my mind spinning in a different direction. I almost gave up all my dreams and what I had worked so hard for but I prayed hard for guidance and peace. I decided to invest more in myself and business and have multiple streams of income within my salon. I also set up other retirement accounts and short term disability insurance and other necessary things to prevent being in the same bind ever again. I met some great business women along the way and learned so much from them ! I am so greatful I didn’t give up on my dreams !

Maegan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved the beauty industry and always had a heart for women and helping others. I originally went to school to be a nurse and quickly learned that was not for me. After I had my second child I decided to go to cosmetology school and loved it from day one. I love bringing out inner and outer beauty in women and reminding them how amazing they really are. I truly believe “ doing hair “ is just a piece to the puzzle. Offering a step above customer service and truly caring about them not just as my Tuesday appointment is what has set me apart. I get to know their families and children and they become apart of my family. I couldn’t imagine not having my sweet guest in my life.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I truly believe learning to build a website and taking marketing classes was a huge hit for me. I also learned how to use technology in my favor by offering online booking and it has been a game changer for my guest and for me.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I use email marketing and I try to take twenty minutes a day and look on their facebooks and instagrams to like and comment on pictures and keep up with their life. I also buy all of my clients Christmas gifts and have started to try and mail birthday cards each month.
