We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maegan Blau a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maegan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Blue Copper Design was born out my personal experience living with a disability and trying to find an accessible home. When I bought my first home we immediately started renovating to make the home work for my accessibility needs. I fell in love with the process of home design and at the same time was finding myself having to be an advocate for the way I needed my home to be set up. That sparked my idea to create an interior design firm specializing in barrier free designs and catering to those who are looking for an advocate in their home design plans.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Maegan Blau and I am the Founder and Principal Designer of Blue Copper Design. I have always had a passion for interiors but the idea to create my own design business came from my personal experience of designing my first home. As a person with a disability, finding an accessible home is a challenge so I wanted to create an interior design studio that caters to those with accessibility needs. We specialize in Barrier Free Design and offer interior design services on every level of budget and involvement. We are proud to be an advocate for our clients in their home design process and strive to blend accessibility and beauty.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals are the best source of new clients for our business. Every refferal we receive is flattering, honoring, and the best compliment we could ask for. It means we are doing our jobs well and providing a trusting service to our clients.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We are actually in a pivoting moment right now. We have been focused on working directly with homeowners in the past and we are now opening another side to our business of working with builders, developers, and other designers. We are striving to be the leading experts in beautiful accessibility and want to be a resource for other businesses in the home industry. It takes a lot of energy to pivot and create new things and we are excited to see where these new connections will take our business.
