We recently connected with Mae Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mae thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
The most innovative thing that I’ve done for my career is creating my own opportunities. I’ve always wanted to work behind the scenes of photoshoots and fashion shows, so I took it upon myself to create and direct my own photoshoots and fashion shows. I don’t like wasting time and I realized that sitting around waiting for an invite wasn’t going to make any waves. So, I took it upon myself to create opportunities.
Just from doing that alone, I’ve been invited to do hair for showcases, fashion shows and photoshoots.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Mae Jones. I am a passionate hairartist. I work with all hair textures and specialize in color. I’ve been working with Schwarzkopf and Joico for my color services. I primarily work with and am in love with Kevin Murphy products for haircare and styling needs.
For as long as I can remember, I have always loved working and playing with hair. Now, not only am I a stylist behind a chair, I am also know for being an artistic hairartist as well.
I first started coordinating and directing my own photoshoots a couple years ago. Before I knew it, I was invited to Raw Artists, which is a showcase of all artists of any kind. After that I was invited to New York Fashion Week (NYFW),which was a very surreal experience for me!
When I got home I reached out to Denver Fasion Week (DFW) and have done a couple of shows for DFW, including this past year’s RedBall. Recently, I’ve been featured in 303Fashion magazine and have future projects lined up.
I love helping people feel and look good. Whether it’s a full cut and color transformation or a simple bang trim.
When you look good you feel good!
For the last three years I’ve been a Glam Ambassador with 99 Hearts, a suicide awareness and prevention nonprofit and have supported a variety of events with my makeup and hair art.
I love working and creating with 99 Hearts.
Helping others find their inner light in a fun artistic makeover helps me find some inner peace. I always strive to live my best life and I like to help others to do the same!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Moving to a location that fits the vibe of the clients that I am trying to appeal to has been the most effective strategy for growing my clientele.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me has been referrals from my clients’ family, friends, neighbors and co-workers; word of mouth, or should I say, hair of the head! Online has also been a major source – Google and Instagram have always worked in my favor.
In the beginning of my career I would give my clients an incentive if they left me a Google review or tagged me in their selfie on Instagram. When I’m promoting my work on Instagram or Google, I make sure to use the same hashtags and keywords for my services.
