We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madyson Pomeroy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madyson below.
Alright, Madyson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
This is such an interesting question and one that I think about all of the time.
Seriously, ALL OF THE TIME.
Owning a business is something that has been completely different than I thought it would be. You see when I started my business, I didn’t really think about what I was doing… the pros… the cons… None of that was really in my mind when I started it back in 2021. I was in a position where I needed two things: money + the ability to stay home with my brand-new baby. The rest of it wasn’t really important to me… at least back then.
Madyson Clark Creative took off immediately, and I was booked out before I even had a chance to breathe… which, I can’t complain about. But, eventually, all of those things that I didn’t really think about when I started, began actually making an appearance in my everyday… and I had to deal with them.
Running a business is TOUGH. Like really freaking hard.
As soon as you think you have things figured out, shit changes again.
I can’t even tell you the amount of times that I have pulled up Indeed while sobbing in the bathtub because I just felt like I was to the end of the amount I could take on with it.
But, here’s what I have realized.
I am stressed 9 times out of 10 — literally have been diagnosed with multiple mental disorders since starting my business due to extreme stress and anxiety. But, the pros really do outweigh the cons of it…
If I want to make more money, I just work harder.
If I want to take the day off. I just take the day off.
If I am sick or have an appointment. I just do what I need to do.
If I need to be more present in my daughter’s life that day, I make that my focus.
I have sent in multiple applications to work a regular job, but I always back out because I have it pretty damn good.
Am I happier as a business owner?
I think ehhh probably. But, I think that happiness is relative.
Some days, I really think that I would be happier clocking in, doing the necessary tasks, and then clocking out.
But, if I did that, I wouldn’t get to experience all of the pros of my life right now.
Happiness is relative.
It changes from day to day, so I am working on not getting so caught up in the “I don’t think this is making me happy right now” because if I did, I don’t think I would ever stick to anything!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Madyson — a college dropout who got tired of working for the man. Now, I run a nearing 6 figure business, providing virtual assisting, social media management, and copywriting for creative businesses.
HOW I GOT STARTED:
In 2020, I had my daughter. Not wanting to go back to my 9-5 grueling social work job, I posted on Facebook asking if any of my friends knew of ANYWHERE hiring remotely. A family friend, from my time living in Louisiana, reached out and let me know that she was looking to hire a virtual assistant. I had no clue what a VA was, but I was willing to learn. I began working with her and eventually started my own business in the first part of 2021. I quickly became booked out and actually became one of the more well-known virtual contractors for the Elopement Creative industry.
WHAT PROBLEMS I SOLVE:
Marketing is a tough nut to crack… ESPECIALLY when you add it into the online space. I help creative business marketing effectively and authentically so that they are able to better run their business. I also know what a time suck these types of tasks can be, so me taking these off of their plate frees up SO much time for them!
WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES I PROVIDE:
I have really become somewhat of a ONE-STOP SHOP for all things marketing. When I began working with these individuals, I realized that all of these services are a necessity… So I kinda specialized in them all! I provide BLOGGING, WEBSITE COPYWRITING, EMAIL MARKETING, INSTAGRAM MANAGEMENT, TIKTOK MANAGEMENT, PINTEREST MANAGEMENT, ADMIN SERVICES, etc.
WHAT SETS ME APART:
There is one thing that I have always strived to do on my platforms… and that is to be real and raw. I preach over and over that if you are being truly yourself within your business, the right people are going to find you. When people find my business, they truly get to know who I am… not the fake business persona that tends to take over when people become business owners.
HOW I WANT POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO VIEW ME:
This is a safe space. Since growing my team and providing these services for over two years now, I have learned that asking help is TOUGH… especially when there is a weird stigma surrounding asking for outsourcing… So many people look at it as being LESS of a business owner if you outsource work… and that just isn’t the case. In Madyson Clark Creative, there isn’t judgment when asking for help!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Instagram has been + probably always will be the number one source of new clients for Madyson Clark Creative.
Like most, I have been frustrated to no end with Instagram. But, here is what I have come to realize with it… It is my livelihood. It really is. If I didn’t show up on Instagram, then I wouldn’t be able to run my business. Although I don’t agree wholeheartedly with the changes they have been making to the platform, I HAVE TO USE IT.
Something that I tell my clients is that, sometimes, it is just how the cookie crumbles.
We have to figure out how to adapt with it
It has definitely been a sore subject out there.
Have you ever had to pivot?
The post-COVID slump is real! Like, annoyingly real.
The economy is way different than when I started my business, and I have had to make some major changes in order to maintain consistency + flow of clients.
Have I had to lower prices?
Yes.
But, I care about my clients. I really do.
They can’t afford $800 services right now, I have needed to bend a bit.
With my clients, if one is having a tight month or two, I have them tell me what they feel like they can afford. From them, we build custom packages based on those numbers. I probably won’t make the same amount moneywise as I did last year, but I know that my clients are being taken care of and that is what matters to me.
