We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mads McCall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Mads, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?

I can definitely say that I have felt misunderstood in my creative expression. I’ve been misinterpreted in my motivations, my insights, and my words. Art is so deeply intertwined with its artist. Yet its meaning escapes the consciousness which makes it whole once exposed to the world. The closeness to my own work has made me fearful to be misunderstood at times. However, In peoples simple misunderstandings of my perception, no matter the differentiation one seed of creativity can grow beyond myself and that’s the brilliance of art. You must be willing to be misunderstood to be heard.

Mads, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I have many names but as of now I’m most known as Mads Kidd McCall. I make music under “madhattxr” on most platforms. I love experimenting with genres, you could say Ive yet to find my niche but I’m having fun. My main instrument is my voice but I play an assortment of instruments. Currently I’m learning how to produce digitally and have many projects on the way.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

Making music has always been about feeling for me. When I was young and overwhelmed Id use music to process the feeling I didn’t have the skills to. Growing up i’ve seen the impact that music has on all the people around me. The unique emotions stirred with the sharp pluck of the right string, or a perfectly placed hum is beyond captivating. This makes me beyond certain that the most fulfilling part of making music or any creative endeavor is being able to make someone feel or giving them the space to.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

My mother is my biggest inspiration and she had the biggest aspirations for me. I hope that one day I will be able to share my music with the world in the way she hopped for me. She was larger than life a teacher by occupation yet she taught me how to be creative and true to myself. My dearest mother goose set me loose i was confused I will excuse extended to the muse.
