We were lucky to catch up with Madisyn Banks recently and have shared our conversation below.
Madisyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
In essence, I have spent my entire life being what you may call “a creative.” I’ve always had a tendency to gravitate toward media, creative planning, and the arts. While growing up, I used all of my “creative talents” and I helped build brands. That sums up how I created Moodhouse in a nutshell.
When I was 13 years old, I started vlogging and video editing as a hobby. Together with my close friend Tori, we created the online series “Dope3TV.” Our series explored up and coming artists and talent in the south. With guest appearances from budding talent, including artists who are killing the game currently. At that time, I was motivated to learn more about how I might apply these skills in the future.
As I moved through school I was involved in a lot of creative outlets: theatre, dance, and acting. I managed social media platforms as a side hustle as well. In 2018, I graduated high school and continued my studies at Clark Atlanta University to complete my undergraduate degree. I majored in Mass Media Arts with a concentration in Public Relations. Over the years, I learned that through Public Relations I could pursue all of the things I’m good at and enjoy doing them as a career. I truly fell in love with PR during my time at Clark Atlanta. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, my time at Clark Atlanta was cut short, but it equipped me for anything. I attended school out-of-state as a first-generation full-time student. I had to put in a lot of effort to cross the finish line. But nonetheless I made it!
I completed eight full-time, remote internships. I had the privilege of working with consumer brands Hi-Chew Candy, Grand Mariner, Dr. Teal’s, Cantu Beauty, Hormel Foods, and more. I even gained experience working in advertising and entertainment, strategizing on projects for The New York Times Advertising, Yard NYC, and Galit, the choreographer for the L.A. Sparks Dance Crew.
After graduating in May of 2022, I decided to establish Moodhouse, a boutique public relations agency. I was compelled to make my “creative ideas” my reality.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a small-town kid from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, who is now a PR Professional with her own brand and agency. Many individuals believe that public relations is solely concerned with generating high-profile press for clients. It is so much more than that. I work as a social media strategist from time to time. I work as a researcher from time to time. I create content on occasion. But overall, I am in charge of my client’s media presence. From the objective and brand messaging to the creative direction.
I offer my experience to corporations, consumer brands, musicians, and influencers. I am creating pertinent initiatives and projects to advance the reputations of brands and my clients.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I have a few professional and personal objectives. Professionally, I aim to have a sizable clientele with unique and motivational tales. I want to take part in ground-breaking work that gives marginalized groups a voice.
In this profession, there aren’t many black publicists. I feel compelled to open greater doors for others who will come after me. My goal is to demonstrate to black youth that they can succeed professionally, even if they are the first in their community to do so. They are not solely confined to social stereotypes or norms.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a ‘creative’ is watching a tiny concept develop into a gratifying success. Also, the opportunity to raise awareness through your work. I believe in utilizing your name or platform to advocate for a cause.
I’ve recently started doing research on climate change and global warming. This research will be used by me to assist in creating campaigns for one of my clients. I’m very passionate about this effort to protect the environment, and I can’t wait to see how our ideas pan out. I am constantly working on new projects, some big and small. I genuinely want to help brands or individuals that intentionally fall in my path. My door is always open to make your ideas come to life!
