We recently connected with Madison Yelle and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
Social media, Instagram specifically, plays a key role in my business. I’d go as far to say 90% of my clients find me through social media! I manage my own, and constantly keep up with the newest features and trends that pertain to my business and photography in general. One thing I’ve learned is that using video (stories, reels, behind the scene posts) is a great way to work with the algorithm even though my services are strictly photography. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be effective!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Texan at heart, but have been serving the Fort Lauderdale area photographing weddings and portraits for about three years. I aim to make clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera because it can be scary! Once we get warmed up and confident, I capture moments, milestones, celebrations, emotions, and turn them into memories for clients to keep forever. The best version of this are prints and albums that can be touched, flipped through, framed, and displayed for enjoying again and again.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My social media actually started as a nature and landscape page (if you scroll way down there’s still some remnants of it). It became what it is today through years of finding a niche and branding style. First, the easiest way to get the initial followers is to engage with people you know in real life. They’re the ones who want to support your journey and growth. Next, providing some sort of value to the audience you’re trying to build is essential. The value will range depending on what your niche is. Finally, using location based hashtags have helped my social media grow by connecting my page with what potential clients are looking for. For example, one of the most effective hashtags I’ve gotten clients from is #fortlauderdalephotographer. Thinking about what a potential follower might search for is a great way to find those relevant hashtags.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Another photographer recommended me the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie early on in my business. It’s been the most influential book in my business (and life) so far. Carnegie breaks down the best ways to connect with people on a deeper level, by being truly interested in people. The reason it’s been so influential is because it has taught me how to use my empathy in an effective way to serve clients solve their problems.
