We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Madison Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Madison , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Everything happens for a reason is one of my favourite quotes.
I fell in love with Joshua Tree and the community that is here. I started working for a small business- Roaming Travelers. Working for Roaming Travelers has been one of my greatest opportunities. I was constantly being inspired by them and other small business owners in the Hi-Desert. With that being said, I decided to start my own small business which was a big risk. I am passionate about jewelry so that is what I decided to specialize in, specifically permanent jewelry.
It has been one of my biggest blessings since now I am able to do something that I am passionate about. I am forever thankful to the support from my friends, family, and all the people who have supported my business- Desert Lux by Madison Layne.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a daughter of a Marine, so I have spent my life on the go and traveling. Throughout that experience I have gotten to see fashion and jewelry from all over the United States. I fell in love with the “western” look while living in South Carolina and Texas.
I have always loved jewelry because it is such an easy way to elevate a look. I got in to permanent jewelry after I got a permanent bracelet in Arizona with my mom. I loved the idea of always having one staple piece on. I love being able to wear jewelry every moment of every day. I learned quickly not all my pieces could withstand daily wear like the permanent bracelet. I did research on different metals and tested many different brands until I found the ones I now use. These are the high-quality pieces that I now offer for people who buy jewelry from my business. Some of these pieces come locally, from California, whereas other items come from my favourite southern brands.
The main thing I hear when people get permanent jewelry with me is, it is now a memory of when they visited Joshua Tree. It makes me so grateful that I can be a part of their experience here!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I created a TikTok account as well as an Instagram page for Desert Lux by Madison Layne. Since I am located in the Joshua Tree Trading Post, I am featured on their website as a service that you can book appointments for. This has helped me expand my clientele. I have also been fortunate enough to have many of the local businesses show me support by mentioning my business!

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Since permanent jewelry is made to last it does not mean that it is indestructible. I understand life happens, so I offer a free weld if the bracelet breaks off. Chains also slightly stretch out over time so I will also refit the jewelry to your desired fit!
