Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Madison Memering. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Madison, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am very happy as a full-time artist but I do think about what it would be like if I would have pursued a more stable lifestyle for myself from time-to-time. I believe a lot of people that have a 9 to 5 may not have to stay up through the night thinking about what needs to be done to sustain themselves as often as I do. Creating art gives me a huge sense of peace in my life. It makes me so proud that others want to celebrate me & my artwork. It is such a special phenomena that I feel so lucky to get to experience. On the other hand, I have a lot of stressors in life pursuing art as a career. I am still very new to navigating my artist career. There is no established path that I get to follow. The opportunities that arise are all because I have had to work hard for them to come my way. The constant brainstorming on how to run my business tends to keep me up at night.
Madison, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Madison Memering & I have been sharing my nature-inspired artwork for a little over 5 years now. I stumbled on my passion for creating by happenstance. I was invited to craft with a group of friends towards the end of my college education. I was almost finished with my college courses when this event happened. My whole trajectory changed when I found this new love. My goals switched from pursuing a masters program to exploring my artistic talents for a bit longer. I have been so lucky from the very beginning that enough people were intrigued by my unique artworks to continue making & starting my own art business. My business started when friends & family would inquire about buying paintings from me & bringing their commission ideas to life. It has changed so much since those early days. I am a self-taught watercolorist & I enjoy the process of creating delicate, detailed nature illustrations that I paint on top of. The artwork stands out because it does not look like the average watercolor paintings you find out in the world. I get to choose natural subjects to pay tribute to. I personally find subjects to paint by spending time out in nature here in Michigan. My discipline has changed from sharing to a small circle of people to trying to reach as wide of an audience as possible. I post my creations to various places on the internet & attend as many in-person events as possible to showcase my works. I feel proud that many individuals trust me with their memories of precious times in hopes of encapsulating them forever with a painting. I also feel tremendously proud that people want my artwork in their homes by purchasing original paintings, various reproductions of my creative works, or wearing my designs on clothing that I printed myself.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal with my artwork is to bring attention to the little things that could be stepped over out in nature. I want to allow the viewer to slow down to appreciate these little things. I find beauty in all living creatures. Working on my earthly illustrations & slowly painting layers of watercolor creates a peace in my heart & I hope my artwork brings that feeling for others as well. My creative journey has given me a love for life, my surroundings, & all the different beings that inhabit this Earth. Feeling closer to these different things have provoked a happiness for me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting to put myself out there & to display my artwork for others to see. This is also the most vulnerable & scariest aspect of my job as well. I have a confidence in my work because I have continuously shown what I have been working on since I started my creative endeavors. I can recall a time during my first art shows when I felt sick to my stomach because of nerves & now I get to travel all over the state to display my work to new eyes frequently. I have noticed, for myself, that the most obvious growth happens when you allow yourself to be a bit uncomfortable in life. It makes me happy to get to meet so many lovely souls along the way. I get to connect with others through their memories that reflect through my artwork. We get to talk about loved ones who have passed, special places that have become distant memories, & fading feelings tied to the outdoors. It’s truly beautiful that I get to have such deep conversations with strangers who I may never see again but they trust me with these pieces of love because of my delicate paintings.
