We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madison Marie . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madison below.
Alright, Madison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am happier then I have ever been in my career! The freedom that comes with being a business owner is pretty unmatched. I honestly think it would be really hard to go back to working a “regular job” so to speak. I know physically I will only be able to do what I do for so long, I’ve recently found myself wondering what would I do next and could I go back to working a 9-5 for someone else? I’m not sure I could! In a future life I still see myself in something creative, and I don’t see why I can’t just keep being a business owner in whatever venture I decide on next! Whatever that may be :)
Madison , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started Madison Marie Hair with the goal in mind to create a safe space for self expression in any and all forms. I’ve been in the hair industry for almost a decade and have learned so much about myself, my craft, and my clients through this passion. While I dabble in a little bit of everything, my favorite services are vivid hair color and curly/wavy haircuts and color. I am a custom creator, each client that sits in my chair will receive a thorough consultation to be sure I am the right fit for their goals, and I pride myself on educating my guests fully to feel confident caring for their hair at home too! No one service that I provide is the same and I love tailoring a cut or color to each individual I get to care for. While in my chair you can expect real conversations, or if you prefer no conversation-I respect this is a time of relaxation for most! I give a mean scalp massage to help release all of the stress life has to offer. I like to sprinkle a little of my witchy woo woo in to my experience with a little goddess oracle if you are called to it too! Im most proud of harnessing the ability to help others step into their most authentic selves just as I have for myself. I’m ready when you are and can’t wait to have you in my chair!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I’ve had to unlearn being in this industry would be comparing myself to other hairstylists. In my career I have experienced a lot of competitive salons and stylists. I always have danced to the beat of my own drum, and it was still hard to feel like I couldn’t even compare to all of these other amazing stylists around me and that I saw all over social media. I started doing what I saw everyone else doing and what was trendy to just get clients in the door, but I wasn’t feeling the passion behind it. It didn’t feel like me. It took time, practice, and a lot of intentional work in my personal and business life to get me where I am today and it certainly wasn’t and isn’t easy. Nevertheless I continue to persevere because the life and business I have built for myself feel more authentic and genuine then anything I have every experienced and it continues to be worth it.
We are artists and we are all unique in what we offer and how we do it. I’ve grown to appreciate the beauty in that so much more now then I did as a when I first started out. I do think the industry has changed a lot since I first went to school, It makes me so happy to see more stylists supporting each other and I’m endlessly grateful to have and have had all of the support that’s gotten me here. I don’t worry about being better then others, I focus more on the experience I can offer my guests knowing they trust me to do them right because at the end of the day they are the reason I get to do what I love.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My social media experience through this industry has been anything but linear. When I first enrolled in cosmetology school, it was a very different world of marketing. I started my first hair page on facebook, before instagram really started to blow up in the hair world. My Facebook page looked completely different then the type of marketing I currently do, it being more like an online portfolio to attract potential clients. Through the years as I grew as a stylist and took a few different marketing classes, I learned so much that has contributed to how I market now. Being an established stylist in my area present day, I’m more intentional with what I’m posting, I’m not building my clientele in the same way I had to when I first started. I’m in a phase of wanting to be more authentic and to educate my existing and potential clientele. I am not for everyone, and I certainly don’t want or need to be. I know what I have to offer and if it sounds like I have what you’re looking for, I can’t wait to meet you :)
My advice? Be yourself and don’t overthink it! People want to see who you are and what you have to offer, be original and intentional. Don’t do what everyone else is doing and don’t just do it for likes-likes don’t all translate to clients. If your goal is to get clients in your chair, make a plan and play to your target audience. Know that will change over time and embrace the change, my instagram feed has had a ton of different grids and styles as I’ve grown in myself and in my career. EMBRACE IT. You’ll look back someday and smile at how much you’ve changed and grown. My last piece of advice is to not let it consume you and make sure you are having fun. Plan ahead and set aside time for creating content and posting so you don’t burn yourself out. It is so easy to get ahead of yourself and bite off more than you can chew-I say this from a lot of experience doing exactly that and even still to this day I am guilty of it. It doesn’t have to be perfect it just has to be you.
