We recently connected with Madison Heydon and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Madison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The story begins back in 2014 when I was an unpaid intern at a juvenile detention center in the mental health unit. Working with troubled youth and their families was profoundly rewarding. It solidified my career path, leading me to a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California with a concentration in mental health and a sub-concentration in neurobiology. After graduating with my Master’s Degree in 2017 it was time to return to my hometown, Reno Nevada. I was ready to launch my career, I stepped into the mental health system and saw its complexity firsthand.
My first role as a clinician was with an agency called Maple Star which operated under umbrella of Medicaid. While I gained invaluable experience, specializing in complex psychotic-related disorders, the environment was often resource-strained. The sheer volume of need was staggering, and the bureaucratic hurdles often slowed down the actual process of healing.
I then transitioned to a clinical role at a respected private practice, Great Basin Behavioral Health. Here, I focused more on prevalent mood disorders like depression and anxiety. I loved the environment—the autonomy, the focus on high-quality care, and the deep learning that occurred.
Working across both the Medicaid and private sectors gave me a clear, critical view of the landscape. This is where the idea for Sandstone Mental Health was born.
The logical leap was this: I saw a massive gap in the middle. On one side, the public sector was overburdened, leading to long wait times and clinician burnout. On the other, many private practices were either saturated or focused on a very narrow scope of issues. What was missing was a private practice that was highly accessible, focused on providing specialized, quality care, and built on a foundation of efficient, modern business practices. I realized that the problem I could solve wasn’t just providing therapy—it was streamlining the delivery of mental healthcare to make it accessible to more people who needed it.
Of course, the internal battle was tremendous. I was terrified to go out on my own. Thoughts like, “Will I have enough clients?” “What are taxes and bills like?” and “What if I’m met with a difficult situation?” were constant companions. But then I remembered my favorite saying: “The only reason you don’t know something is because you haven’t learned it yet.” This helped to shift my emotion from fear to excitement. The idea of learning, building, and creating something that directly addressed a societal need—that’s what truly got me excited. It wasn’t just about being a business owner; it was about scaling my ability to help the community by designing a system where mental health could flourish. Once I committed to the learning process, the anxiety faded, and the path to Sandstone Mental Health opened up, proving to be worthwhile and highly successful.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Our Unique Distinction
What truly sets Sandstone Mental Health apart is the integration of clinical expertise with a robust business structure.
While my background is in neurobiology and psychology, I’ve approached the practice as a business owner who must ensure efficiency and stability. I knew that my clinical skill was a prerequisite, but the logic of success required a streamlined system. We operate on a foundation that minimizes administrative friction, allowing our compassionate and skilled clinicians to focus 100% on what they do best: providing therapy. This focus on stability—both clinical and operational—is our signature difference.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
The story of funding Sandstone Mental Health isn’t one of venture capital or large loans; it’s a very personal story of discipline, sacrifice, and resourcefulness. I deliberately chose a path that minimized debt and maximized my control over the business’s launch.
The initial capital was built, quite literally, one penny at a time over a two-year period. During my time working in the mental health field post-graduation, I was not making a fortune, which made this saving difficult, but also essential. I became fiercely disciplined, saving every possible dollar to create the necessary cushion. My focus wasn’t on buying a beautiful, ready-made clinic; it was on securing the essential foundational asset: the physical office space.
With the savings I accumulated, I was able to put a deposit on a space. When I moved in, it was far from beautiful, but it was mine. From there, the rest of the startup capital went toward creating the crucial client environment.
I chose to furnish the space thoughtfully, not expensively:
I bought furniture primarily from Facebook Marketplace and secondhand stores.
I personally painted the walls and brought in items from my own home.
This “bootstrapping” approach wasn’t just about saving money; it was about designing the exact aesthetic I wanted to achieve.
My vision for Sandstone Mental Health was to be the opposite of a sterile, clinical setting. I wanted a space that immediately felt comfortable, safe, warm, welcoming, and like a home.

How did you build your audience on social media?
First and foremost, I need to emphasize that I handle all of our social media myself. We are a small but mighty agency, and while handing it off to an expert would save time, doing it ourselves ensures our voice remains authentic and true to our clinical values. We didn’t “build an audience” through aggressive campaigns; we built a community by offering genuine help and support online, making people feel heard before they even walk through our door.
