We were lucky to catch up with Madison Haley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Madison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
As someone who went straight to working at an office and odd retail jobs after graduating high school, I can honestly say that becoming a tattoo artist has been my saving grace. There is nothing more I’d rather do than make people feel confident and beautiful in their own skin with what I am able to provide for them!
Madison, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have known from a young age I’ve always wanted to get tattoos, and when I was in 9th grade realized I wanted to make tattoos as well.
It was intimidating and hard at first as I’m not the most confident person I could be, and I definitely think that set me back quite a bit in my apprenticeship. I still struggle with confidence issues to this day but I can say that pushing through insecurities and doubts was worth it to get where I am currently.
I am proud to say that I can create a safe and clean environment for all those who come through our doors and sit in my chair. It means the absolute world to me that my clients trust me to put permanent artwork on their bodies, and to continue to come back again and again. Without them I wouldn’t be tattooing!
My goal in my career is to create a sense of fulfillment and confidence in my clients by making them feel beautiful with permanent body art. My favorite part about tattooing is seeing my clients reactions to them seeing their new tattoo when it’s finally done!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Yes.
In my experience, there will always be clients that do not understand or respect the time and effort we put into our jobs and creating artwork for clients.
Although we are providing a service for our clients, we are sometimes treated as though our jobs are easy or just a hobby when in reality this job is extremely demanding. It is taxing mentally & physically, as well as fiscally, but because it’s “just art” it’s often deemed as not an important job or worth being respected.
But for every one client who talks down on us, there are a dozen more who genuinely care and respect our efforts and those are the clients we love to keep around!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Making my clients feel confident in their own skin has always been my #1 for this job. It makes me happy to know I can help others feel beautiful in their own skin!
I am also a lover of science and art, and tattooing is the perfect blend of both worlds!
