We were lucky to catch up with Madison Galyon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Madison, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
It’s always scary taking a risk because at the beginning you don’t know if you’re going to succeed or fail. The unknown is what’s scary. I took a risk just by simply starting a photography business. In my area it is so saturated with photographers, it’s hard to stand out but I took a leap of faith and I put my heart into it. Photography is my passion and it’s one of my favorite things to do, besides being a mom of course! I have been doing this for about 5 years now and I started small. I started taking photos for family and friends just for fun and to for the practice. Looking back to where I began, I didn’t realize how much I would have grown. Had I not taken the risk, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I have the most amazing clients and I love what I do!

Madison, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always loved art and photography is a form of art. I got my very first camera for my birthday one year. My parents got it for me and ever since then I haven’t been able to put the camera down. I’m always learning new creative ideas to portray emotions, make sessions fun and memorable. I mainly shoot weddings because I love love! I love being part of the couples special day. I also shoot newborns, family, and boudoir. I am most proud of how much I’ve grown from day one to where I am today. It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication. This isn’t even my full time job! I work full time, am a mom to a beautiful boy, and do photography on the weekends! I am always here for my clients and I just love it when I deliver their gallery and they love them! Seeing them smile makes it all worth it.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
It has taken some time getting all the professional equipment needed to produce high quality photos. I had to work hard and save up money to be able to buy the camera body, lenses, off camera flash, camera bag, and editing software. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that most people don’t realize such as the long hours of editing and culling through all the photos.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth mainly. That goes a long way! They’ll tell their family and friends and then those will tell their family and friends and it’s like domino effect. I also periodically run Facebook ads to get more traction if I’m running a special and that has worked out well for me. I’m also part of several different wedding groups in my surrounding areas! There’s a ton of things you can do to get new clients.
