Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Madison Bradshaw. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Madison thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the early days of establishing your own firm. What can you share?
Ive told this story a few times about how I dont feel like I really made the decision but that it just kind of happened. And I still feel that way, I didnt really wake up one day and say “you know what, im going to be a photographer”. Ive been playing with various cameras for a long time and since I was old enough that my parents trusted me I was using a DSLR. But even though it just kind if happened, I am beginning to realize just how much of it was my own determination. They say “do what you love but if youre good at something dont do it for free”. It really did start that way, but it takes so much work to keep it going! Especially with all the social media and everything to keep up with nowadays. You cant just be a business owner you have to be your own manager, marketer, content creator, budgeter, advertiser and everything in between. Props to everyone else whos doing it, its hard!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a lover of all types of photography. But im really specifically in love with equine photography (horses). Theres something about showing the connection between a person and their horse that sings to my soul. And really any animal photography, you know we only have these blessings in our lifes for so long and they impact us immensely. I feel like taking on the responsibility of capturing that is really special and really important. All types of photography have their importance but theres so many people in wedding photography, couple’s and families and rather few who do animals and pets.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Well haha this one im still trying to unlearn. But really Ive always been a huge DIY im not going to ask for help unless I have to kind of person. And I cant count the amount of times if I had just reached out how much better things would have turned out. Specifically recently my laptop was getting older and having a hard time keeping up with the workload I was putting on it. It kept getting slower and slower and I didnt have any other options. I tried to get through busy season with it but it backfired so hard. My photos were taking 3x as long to finish and deliver and that really hurt my credibility. Word of mouth is huge and when youre not delivering it says a lot about your business.
Thankfully I had my amazing brother build me a new computer that runs amazing and Ive had 2x faster turn around times than I was having even before the computer issues.
But really, just ask for help when you need it. It saves so much stress and heartache.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Transparency. I lay it all out for my clients, what the session should look like, how to prepare and even what to expect after. I dont hide any fees I dont pretend when something isnt working. And that has helped my clients feel more comfortable and more connected to my brand. Of course I keep things fun and adventurous but I dont keep my clients guessing whats next.
I said it already but word of mouth is everything and if my clients aren’t comfortable with me theyre not going to share good stories. So I always try to make them feel like its about them and not have to stress the other details.
