We recently connected with Madison Anglin and have shared our conversation below.
Madison, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your ories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I initially knew I wanted to have an artistic career by the time I was in high school. I felt how liberating it was to create with other artists. However, it wasn’t until I heard my first composition, “The New Awakening” a string quartet I wrote, being performed live for the first time that I knew I wanted to build a career out of writing music.
There wasn’t a greater feeling than hearing these notes I initially wrote on my music notation software suddenly becoming something more real. I couldn’t wait to expand my compositions into larger ensembles.
My path to creating my own music came from learning classical piano. While I loved the craft and proving to myself I could continue learning more advanced pieces, messing up during practice led to be the most fun. Whenever I would play a wrong note or chord, it would strike up something else entirely. Eventually I’d create my own piece out of the chord or progression I accidentally played and forget all about practicing my assigned repertoire.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a multi-media composer and pianist currently based in Los Angeles, CA. I have a strong educational background in music with a Masters degree in Screen Scoring from New York University as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from Belmont University in Nashville, TN.
I originally got into my craft through classical piano and eventually found my way to scoring student and independent films during my time at NYU. My most recent endeavor has been interning with Emmy award winning composer, Jeff Russo through my internship with the Television Academy Foundation. I’m so grateful for every opportunity I’ve received up to this point and I hope to use everything I’ve learned to help tell unique stories through music.
I’ve had training in this field from various mediums such as studio experience, freelance composing, and classical training all starting at the age of 17. This has helped me gain both artistic and leadership skills which I take with me into every project. I’m very proud of my dedication to the craft as well as the network of other creatives that make continuing the journey even more worth it.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Faith drives my creative journey. I believe that everyone has a purpose on this earth. My hope is to fulfill what God has created me to do. Whether that’s through composing, making art with others, or various leadership roles, I know I want to remain grounded in my relationship with God.
It’s very easy to get caught up in what the world deems as success and to chase certain ideals that don’t matter at the end of the day. I strive to do my best to avoid those obstacles in the midst of my journey.
One of my goals is to sustain a healthy lifestyle while building my projects, network, and collaborative opportunities in the midst of an industry that can be very grueling.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is knowing that something you created is able to resonate with someone else. I personally experience this with the directors I’m blessed to work with.
As a composer, it’s very rewarding to be able to contribute to the universal language that is music. Since I am not a multi-instrumentalist, it’s surreal to get those opportunities of hearing music you wrote being performed live for a recording or performance.
Connecting with other musicians, engineers, writers, etc. is crucial to making music because it’s not always a one person operation. We need collaboration to see our vision come to life especially in the world of media composing. There is nothing better than seeing everyone’s hard work become a reality.
