We recently connected with Madison Allshouse and have shared our conversation below.
Madison, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
Owning a marketing agency, I teach all of my clients ONE word to remember throughout the starting, scaling and maintaining phase of their business. Community. If your business or your brand doesn’t have a sense of community then it is doomed to fail. When I started my first large project, Girl with a Business, I had one thing in mind. Community! Community has been the spearhead of my entire path as the founder of Girl with a Business and I’ve let those same tactics influence my other businesses as well. Even my personal brand. My big 3 morals are: Community, Transparency, Relatability. When all 3 of those are at the forefront of your process, you are doing something right. We live in a world where every big box store and brand are breathing down our necks to push products, sales, services, etc. We don’t know the CEO of target. We don’t know who’s in charge at Whole Foods. That creates in inevitable disconnect from business to consumer. We are coming up on our 2 year anniversary of Girl with a Business and we started from scratch and now gathered almost 9,000 members. With chapters and workshops all over the world, I think we scaled it correctly. I can say the same for my marketing agency, House of Prieto. In 2020 it was just me, bringing in a few extra thousand a year. Now, we wrapped up $96,000 in revenue from just myself and two team members. Our work speaks for itself. Our processes speak for themselves!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Madison Allshouse-Wilcox, my family and friends call me Madi. I’m 24 years old, living right outside of Nashville, TN. I’m a woman of many hobbies and traits, a jack of all trades if you will! I like to call it “multi-passionate”. My primary work is owning my marketing agency, House of Prieto. I also own a luxury event venue called The Berlin, I own Girl with a Planner (a stationary company), I founded Girl with a Business, a female focused community for entrepreneurs and more recently I opened a large scale decor rental company with my husband called Capitol Party Co!
I pride myself in excellence AND personality in all of my work. Whether you are just starting your business and need guidance or you have a wedding to decorate for, chances are, my team can help!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Not everything needs a response.
This is something that was tough to learn, because being in the public eye and gaining so much traction so quick had some negative affects too. Everyone had an opinion on what we were doing and what our mission was. So many people had something negative to say. At first, I tried to defend myself and our mission in every situation. But instead, I’ve learned that not everything needs a response. Sometimes the best response is silence. If someone hears something about you or your business and runs with it, let them! They probably weren’t your ideal client anyway.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
I used to own Elite Auto Detail, a mobile auto detailing company here in Clarksville, TN. I started it with just a few supplies and my sisters help in 2019 and by 2021 we had scaled to a full-fledge operation with quite a few team members. I did however lose interest in it, It was a full time job just running the back end of the business and I grew resentment for it, Which sucked, because it was a highly profitable business. Instead of closing it or letting my resentment run it into the ground, I sold it! It was one of the easiest processes of my life and really lifted a weight off my shoulders. Sometimes it’s okay to let go of things that aren’t serving you 🖤
