We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madisen Mahoney . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madisen below.
Alright, Madisen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
I have been doing photography off and on for the past 7 years and fell into the mindset that I needed a 9 to 5 job to be successful. But after working as a full-time event coordinator for a nonprofit, it took me all of 4 months to realize that I am a free spirit trying to fit into a cubicle. So I resigned and decided to go full-time into photography. So in a way, this is my fresh start and a second chance to do things differently and find joy in what I do again.
Madisen , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I love finding beauty in even the smallest moments and want to capture them. Even when I was working a 9 to 5 job I would find a way to capture moments. And with that as my motive, I have founded my photography business on this. keeping things simple, with no big equipment or fancy gadgets (even though there is nothing wrong with that) I want to use natural light to take a picture. Making anyone feel their most beautiful, confident, and comfortable.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I have had a few moments over the years where I have had to switch gears but, Quitting my 9 to 5 job just a few months ago to go full-time into photography takes the cake. I took what I called a “big girl job” working full-time at a nonprofit. I had benefits, a 401K, and a cubicle. and while I loved who I worked with and got to experience so. many cool new things I wasn’t doing what I loved and even worse fell for the lie that having a “big girl job” and the coveted middle cubicle made me successful.
So after getting to a breaking point I quit and finally committed to doing full-time photography!
I have never been so happy to make such a big shift. And by doing this I have learned that I don’t need to have a 9 to 5 to be successful.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to grow and learn. Now that I am all in, it’s about trying to grow my little business and learn as much as I can to improve my craft to give people the best that I have to offer!
