Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Madi Wolf. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Madi , appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I grew up in a musical household in Virginia. At 7, I started guitar. It opened the door to songwriting for me. I was in multiple bands. The first being an all girl band, “Pink Tomorrows.” We were performing in malls and local venues. We wore pink and black. We were in our “I wanna be like Avril Lavigne” era. Next was “Madi Wolf and The Pack.” I was 12 years old when we joined and the rest of us were 25 plus, seasoned musicians. This was where my skills started to develop and I became more shaped into not only a performer but as the lead singer in a band. Being in a band is synergistic. We all rely on one another. Show after show, I realized it was time to dive into my solo career. Which meant I needed to relocate, go west. I have worked with many creatives in the industry. In my 25 years I’ve had some incredible experiences that have impacted me as an artist. Moving to LA was one of the best decisions of my life both creatively and personally. When you know, you know and when you’re in the right place you feel it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
While everyone was out at a party, prom, playing sports, I was in my space or the studio making music. I traveled constantly. From Virginia to New York, LA, Nashville, Florida, Chicago, Jersey, you name it. I was finding my sound and developing with different writers and producers. I learned very quickly that the music industry demanded respect. You have to pay your dues and fight like hell. I found this even harder as a young lady turned woman in the industry. You walk into a studio with mostly men and you feel this overwhelming need to overcompensate your talent because you know you’re more than just a pretty face or a product. A lot of thought goes into “what do I wear?” “Who will be there?” “Am I cute, sexy, talented, do I fit the part?” None of that truly matters. I feel I hold my own in the room and that’s how I shine.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I wrote a hook for an artist and I walked in with the lyrics already written and timestamped. The artist cut the record and suddenly others were claiming my work. I had to hold my ground and it was a very scary eye opener for me. Sometimes people get shuffled over because they are so desperate for an accolade and recognition, they just go with it. However, this was my art, I worked hard as hell on it and I had to fight for it.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Some write, some sing. The creatives who do both are in their own lane. I feel like a lot of people outside the industry don’t know their favorite artist may or may not be writing the song they love. Songwriters are 100% the spine of the music industry. I encourage everyone to go to the lyric section of their favorite song and see how many writers are on it and who the writers are. Maybe it’s ten, twenty or one. Maybe the artist didn’t write it, maybe they did.
