We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Madhusudan Rajagopalan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Madhusudan, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our company, Water and Light Applications India, operates in the domain of coherent water. The company’s vision is to restore all the water on this planet to its coherent state. Coherence is a state where water is in its most natural form, which can also be visualised as a liquid crystalline structure. When water is in a coherent state, it has a remarkable influence on all biological systems- be it humans, animals, plants, or soil.
This is an important objective as water is far more significant than we might think. While water is around 70% of the human body in mass terms, it is much higher at a molecular level: nearly 99% of all molecules in our body are water molecules! Hence the quality of water we drink has a huge impact on our health. In the regular water we consume these days, H2O molecules move in a chaotic and irregular manner. Our technology transforms this water into its full spectrum coherent state through a simple method. This technology was created by two Dutch scientists after over twelve years of intense research, experiments and testing in various laboratories and field environments.
Coherent water has the ability to revitalize any biological system, as consistently observed from our various scientific studies. In humans, the benefits have been seen in the form of higher energy levels, better brain coherence, better gut health, stronger immunity as well and an overall improvement in well-being. But beyond these areas, coherent water opens up the pathways to making your body more conscious, more connected, more in tune with the harmonic rhythms of nature! Even in plants and soil, coherent water has shown a sharp impact in higher energy levels, a stronger natural immunity, and improved yields as well.
The underlying purpose of this innovation is incredibly important for us. Today, in a world dominated by technology and running at a frenetic pace, people are searching for ways to restore their health, and to restore balance in nature. If this can be enabled by something as basic and essential as water, then it deserves to be explored to its fullest potential – this is our abiding belief. We also believe that water is incredibly more powerful and more important than we could ever imagine. Hence, studying it further through cutting-edge research, adapting the technology for a wide variety of applications – be it drinking water, water for farms, or even public water bodies such as lakes and rivers, and spreading the awareness of this innovation are extremely exciting for us.
I have a deep interest in wellness, holistic living as well as spirituality. In that context, our company’s mission resonates with me and fills me with energy to take this technology to the world and let as many people benefit from it as possible.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have a background in engineering and management, having done my Bachelors in Technology from IIT Madras and my MBA from IIM Bangalore. I started my career in management consulting where I advised several multinational and Indian corporations on strategy and performance improvement related areas. This enabled me to build a strong base in understanding and solving business problems in the real world. Hence, when an opportunity presented itself, I utilized it to co-found a successful knowledge-based business focused on financial and business research outsourcing. This gave me an incredible experience in building a professional talent based company from scratch to a large scale company of 500+ employees.
After many years in that venture, I began to look for a larger purpose in my career and fulfillment in my life in general. This led to a personal journey in yoga, spirituality and wellness. My interests started gravitating towards areas that would provide a good balance between my professional interests and larger social interests. I was looking for ways in which my work would have a larger impact on and relevance to society, going beyond just the profit motive. This process led me to the right set of people who shared the same values as I did.
Soon, I met two scientists from The Netherlands who had been doing great work in the field of water. I joined them to form our current venture (Water and Light Applications India) and lead the business in India, Asia and Africa. Our company has pioneered a technology that transforms the properties of water in an exceedingly simple way, yielding substantial benefits to all users – humans, animals, plants and soil. Our technology is backed by over fourteen years of research and scientific studies, and has wide ranging applications from drinking water, to irrigation, to cleansing soil systems, to revitalizing aquatic ecosystems in water bodies.
Our technology holds the potential to substantially enhance the health of biological systems in a natural manner, and the extent of positive impact possible from that is mind-boggling. This is what excites me and each new testimonial we hear from customers adds to our conviction that this is a truly revolutionary opportunity. I find it particularly heartening that the success of the business (www.somarka.com) would actually mean more good for consumers and the world. Furthermore, we are committed to supporting public projects that will allow the adoption of full spectrum coherent water in plural lives, across all sections of culture and society. We believe in making health an essential component of life, not a luxury!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As I mentioned in the earlier question, after my initial years in management consulting, I co-founded and ran a business focused on financial and business research outsourcing. While this business grew well and became successful, there came a point where situations were out of alignment, both internally and externally. Personally, I had embarked on an inner quest for contentment, and how to make myself more meaningful and relevant to the world. Externally, circumstances evolved in the company that led to unpleasant conflicts with other stakeholders. The culmination of these two parallel strands led me to pivot away from the company that I had co-founded.
In my quest for the next opportunity, I was clear in my goals – a business that has a clearly defined higher purpose, built on ethics and integrity, people with similar values and one that also allowed me to pursue my spiritual interests in parallel. This led me to my next set of roles – CEO of Water and Light Applications India (my current commercial venture) as well as CEO of Mohanji Foundation, the spiritual non-profit organisation that was established by my spiritual guide and mentor, Mohanji. My pivot away from the previous role meant a radical shift in how I operate – operating multiple start-ups, handling commercial and non-profit organisations in tandem, as well as managing more uncertainties, each of which brought its own set of challenges. However, since the larger purpose is clear and not captive to short term goals, the pursuit is worth it! Looking back at this, I can say that when one has clarity on the non-negotiables and what really matters, the rest of the pieces of the puzzle arrange themselves to help you achieve that. This is especially true when the underlying motive is genuine and go beyond just one’s personal gains.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I am a strong believer that experience is the best teacher one can have, and I have had the opportunity to learn about situations, people, business and various other aspects of life through a diverse set of situations that I experienced over the years. However, certain books serve to open your eyes to new ways of thinking and techniques that could help one get better. In recent years, a few books stand out in terms of their impact on me:
1) Atomic Habits, by James Clear: This book made a mark on me for simplifying the concept of how tiny incremental improvements, done consistently, can deliver outsized benefits. The practicality and techniques on offer make it very relatable and useful.
2) Deep Work, by Cal Newport: In today’s world of constant stimuli and distractions, the author highlights how deep work or concentrated effort is actually a “superpower”. Again, an eye-opener and very relevant book.
3) The Power of Purity, by Mohanji: A profound series of questions and answers to questions about life, spirituality and various other topics. This is written in an extraordinarily simple language, yet the messages are profound and compel you to contemplate deeply. This book, and the teachings of Mohanji, have had a strong influence on my approach to life and business.
4) Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda: The book that first opened my eyes to the world of spirituality. I found it almost unputdownable and it kindled my quest that took a more defined shape in the years to come.
