We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madelyn Dover. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madelyn below.
Madelyn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am only happy as an artist or creative. Regular jobs can be helpful for making a living while you’re working on the things you actually enjoy. It doesn’t matter if I get paid or not for my art, it’s gonna be made either way. That’s what makes my life happy. Art brings meaning to my life
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I began modeling because I actually started as a photographer first. As a young kid and teenager I became interested in cameras and computers, taking photos and videos, editing them into my own projects and slideshows, etc. During high school I became super interested in photography because I enjoyed documenting memories. It turned into me trying photography in my free time. Eventually I wondered what it would be like in front of the camera as an adult, My mom also used to do “glamour shots” with me for fun as a little girl, and she always told me that I could be a model. I wanted to believe her but didn’t until I did my first real photoshoot as a young adult. Ever since then, I have continued to work in this industry, usually as a model. It is so much fun and it brings me creative joy and satisfaction to be a part of photoshoots as well as conceptualize my own. I’m proud to say that I’m nationally & internationally published as a model and photographer!
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I was 19-20, I was doing photography and working a super physical job full time. I also just moved out on my own. I got injured at work and had to go through physical therapy for months and changed jobs as a result. For a long time, all I could really focus on was working this new job and paying bills. I knew that doing only this was not going to make me happy, and I needed to get creative again. Then COVID hit and my job became remote, which meant I was able to move. It wasn’t until moving closer to Atlanta & Chattanooga that my modeling really gained traction. I was able to do shoots every weekend and actually build a diverse portfolio. That really helped launch me into the modeling world.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main mission is to live a creative life. That is one of the most important things to me. I know that I will be happy in life as long as I have the time to do something creative, whether that be modeling, photography, painting, drawing, creative directing/concept creation, music, etc. I understand that not everyone gets to make a living from their dream, but it would be cool to get there one day. Until then, I’m always gonna make time to be creative. That’s the goal.
