We recently connected with Madeline Basler MS, RDN CDN and have shared our conversation below.
Madeline , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
As a chubby kid that was called “Big Mad” I have made it my mission to help girls and women feel better in their bodies and understand and reconnect to themselves through nutrition, and empowering them to make and set their own intentions about their health. I have seen way too many people try to starve themselves to be thin and it has become a passion to help them recover. As a practice we work from a health at every size mentality as we have learned that diets fail almost 100% of the time. We focus on establishing healthy habits that align with our patients values and lifestyle.
We are intuitive eating and women’s health dietitians that specialize in eating disorders, intuitive eating, hormone health and gut dysfunction.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I went back to school when my kids when to college initially for restaurant management. My love of food and health brought me to study nutrition. I have always loved connecting to others and my practice has allowed me to help many achieve wellness and acceptance. We are non-diet dietitians helping those to connect to their true needs and wants to achieve overall health and wellness that is sustainable for themselves not because someone tells them they must! True change can ensue when acceptance occurs.
My practice focuses on intuitive, functional and integrative health and we specialize in eating disorders, intuitive eating, hormonal health and gut dysfunction.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Going back to school later in life (when my own kids went to college) and taking part in caring for elderly parents was a challenge. I had never graduated college and returning to find I was still matriculated was the first sign that this was the right decision. Looking back now I do not know how I did it however I do know that I am a very determined lady! Completing my undergraduate, masters, studying abroad in Italy, as well as getting into a very competitive internship program and sitting for the national registered dietitian exam was an enormous amount of work while taking care of a family and myself. Starting my own business while continuing to wait tables then while working as an outpatient dietitian although extremely rewarding required resilience.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Connections are key in building relationships that add to growing your business. Having a sincere interest in others and helping others has helped Real You Nutrition branch out to many to improve their health and well-being. Connecting to therapists, doctors, and working with our patients has led to many referrals by word of mouth which is extremely rewarding.
