We recently connected with Madeleine Berckley and have shared our conversation below.
Madeleine, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Over the summer, I got the wonderful experience of Stage Managing Bring It On at the Hobby Center with Theatre Under the Stars. It truly was a life changing experience and one that I will never forget. I had been dreaming of finding an opportunity like this since I started stage managing my sophomore year of high school. The skills that I gained from this and the coworkers that I got to learn from were incredible. Everyone that I got to work with taught me something and I think the reason it was so meaningful to me was because I was surrounded by other artists pursuing their craft just like me. It was different than any other environment I had ever been in and was so refreshing to be around so many other people who are so eagerly passionate to create something truly outstanding.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
For those of you who don’t know me, I feel that it’s important to know I am a go-getter and I strive to constantly be the best version of myself. I want to use my work to prove to others that all you need is a dream and a positive and focused mindset. There will always be room to grow and it is important to keep your goals in mind. I started stage managing shows in high school and am now at the University of Texas at Austin studying stage management. It is something that I love to do and in the past year I have gained so many experiences just by putting myself out there. What I’ve learned is that people can always tell you “no” but you never know if they’ll say “yes” unless you put yourself out there. So far, I have worked with Austin Fashion Week, Disney, and arguably one of the biggest theatre programs in Houston. I am also pursuing a minor in communication studies here at UT and that kind of plays into my love for photography. I learned how to use a camera when I was in fifth grade and I haven’t put it down since. One of my favorite things is to use my photography skills to document all of the opportunities I have been given. I feel like you can tell so many different stories with a single picture and it continues to interest me every single day. Later after college, my biggest goal is to find a way to combine these two interests. Whether that be working as a content creator with a music or theatrical program or as a professional stage manager. I love working behind the scenes with different artists to help tell their stories and to also learn how to create my own along the way.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I think the biggest struggle so many people have with social media is that so many people get caught up in doing things for the number of views, likes, or follows they will get off of a post. I think that is still an important factor especially if you are an influencer and that is the way you make a living. However, I believe that even if there is one person that’s inspired by something I do, it will be worth it. For me, it’s more about the takeaway than the results of the post. I love the art I am creating and I also know that there have been so many artists that have inspired me along the way to constantly chase my goals. My hope is that I can use my different social media platforms to promote the arts and inspire others to find a love for the arts as well.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I think it’s important to remember is that everyone has their own journey and their own story of how they got to where they are today. That being said, networking is everything. Most people are willing to help you, but again you just have to put yourself out there and look for resources. I guarantee that someone is out there and willing to help you if you look.
