We were lucky to catch up with Maddisen Morden recently and have shared our conversation below.

Maddisen , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?

This is something we talk about all the time… Whenever we hire or train somebody new, the first thing we tell them is that the most important thing about working at the shop is making sure that we are a bright spot in someone’s day. We want every single person to feel welcomed and comfortable. Our space is bright and airy, and the products we sell are colorful and happy. My hope is that when people think of Personify, they think of a space that adds a little brightness to their day. We talk about Personifying your world… meaning we hope the pieces you buy from us make you feel more like YOU. I hear all the time from customers that they get compliments in their Personify clothes all over the place. That always makes me feel like I’m doing my job right.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My mom and I own Personify together and we are coming up on our 9th year of business – which feels wild to say! We are a women’s clothing, gift, and lifestyle store selling everything from unique clothing to whimsical home goods to specialty gifts. Our flagship location is in Downtown Duluth, a community we have grown to love. We both live in Duluth and feel very invested in our town. Our online shop is also busy and bustling! We launch a new collection on personifyshop.com every Friday and ship pieces all over the country. We search high and low for unique things you won’t find everywhere else. It’s a special job and we feel lucky to be able to do it.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I think our consistency is key. We are open every day and have longer hours than most retail spots…we want to make sure people have the opportunity to come shop with us in person if they are local to the area. We get tons of new things in every day. Our regulars know that they could come in seven days a week if they wanted to and they would see something new every single time. I personally go to a lot of different markets throughout the year to ensure we have unique, exciting, and special things… and that includes everything from baby things to candles to gifts to shoes to clothing and more. We are also committed to making sure people can shop it all online. Everything comes together for a very consistent experience. People are craving good customer service and I think we deliver on that every time.

We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.

Well, she’s my mom. It’s actually hard for me to imagine being in business with anyone else. One of her dreams in life was to have a shop and it brings me great joy to know we have accomplished that together and more. Working in the world of independent retail is no joke – and I’m glad we have each other through the ups and downs.
