We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maddie Cain a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maddie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always loved photography since I was a kid. I used to always take my moms digital camera and take pictures of everything. I noticed I was pretty good at capturing a moment in high school but I was such a shy kid so I didn’t pursue anything. A few years ago I got gifted with an older professional camera but I let it sit in my closet for a year. It wasn’t until last year I felt I was finally ready to take things to the next level. I had grown so much and wasn’t so shy anymore. But honestly I didn’t know if it would work out, if I would book clients. I took a leap of faith anyway and the support I got was unbelievable. I’ve had so many bookings since and I have repeat clients who I’ve grown close to. The thing that is unique about my business is that my rates are very cheap and affordable. I believe everyone has a right to be able to have family pictures and memories to cherish forever but most consider it a luxury with how expensive it usually is. I value my business on affordability so everyone can have memories to look back on.
Maddie , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, my name is Maddie. I’m a 24 year old photographer from Cincinnati, Ohio. I just started my photography business in April of 2023. I offer all kinds of shoots. Minis, headshots, boudoir, couples, family, engagements, weddings, anything you want I can help create that vision for you! I say my prices are what sets me apart from other photographers, my rates are cheap and affordable. I’m most proud of capturing the true, raw emotion of my clients in my photos. Their feedback is everything to me, good or bad! It’s going to be what helps me keep growing into the best photographer I can be. I also love it when my clients tell me they feel comfortable around me during a shoot because it can be nerve wracking. I want my future clients to know that I create a fun, comfortable atmosphere while shooting and I can bring whatever vision you have to life.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I was gifted a professional camera a few years back so that was free of charge but I knew I couldn’t use that camera forever because I wanted something with better, higher quality. Camera equipment is so so expensive but I luckily have one of the best support systems out there. My family managed to buy me a new high quality camera. I am forever thankful for their support.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A story from my journey that shows my resilience is when one of my clients wasn’t very happy with the final results. During the shoot my camera started to act up and wasn’t taking pictures so I wasn’t able to capture as many photos as I usually do. The more photos you take, the more you have to choose from. I offered to redo the shoot for free or they could pick a different type of session, no charge, right on the spot because I knew I wouldn’t be happy with them myself. I know I’m not going to make everyone happy and that’s okay. That’s why I encourage everyone to take a look at other local photographers and see which one is the perfect fit for them.
