We were lucky to catch up with Madalyn Jones recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Madalyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
My name is Madalyn Jones. I have been in business for 4 years. I own a small business. My small business is a woman’s clothing store. Women love to shop, that is no lie, however providing them with quality customer service and a place to feel comfortable being themselves is what we do best at Can’t Hide Pretty.
Our mission is to help you feel comfortable, and “pretty” in your own skin. Each woman is different and unique in their own way. We want to highlight each of those unique qualities by providing an array of clothing and fashion for each woman to enjoy. You can’t hide pretty, because it comes from within- that’s what we believe. You will find nothing short of amazing quality, customer experiences and top quality items at an affordable price.
Each online order that goes out receives a hand written thank you note, as well as 2 day shipping as long as the postal service cooperates 😘
We are easy to work with, flexible, and want your experience with us to be enjoyable, fun and relaxing while finding the pieces that bring out your “pretty”, starting from within.
Madalyn , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Small business owners around the globe can all agree that it is very hard and grueling while also being super rewarding to work and own your own business. I always knew I loved clothing and getting dressed up.
I own Can’t Hide Pretty Boutique in Panama City Fl. I started by meeting a client of my husbands and realizing she worked for a reputable clothing brand that actually started near me, on highway 30A in the Panhandle of Florida. It peaked my interest!
That being said. Our relationship and friendship grew on fashion and the love of buying and creating apparel for woman to feel their very best in. I would drive 2.5 hours to the warehouse of this reputable clothing brand and buy all of her overstock, one offs, model pieces or anything that she could not sell, and I would repair it, fix it, and resell it for a cheaper price.
Woman flocked to it, knowing the label and seeing the price tag much lower. This did not hurt or effect her branding because these were pieces she could not sell due to imperfections ect.
After doing this for about 6/8 months I quickly realized I could actually create a clothing store with my own style. I started to create my website and find friends and family to model the brands I had chosen. I shipped out of a small warehouse which I shared with my husband as he continued his small business within a different realm, for 2.5 years then an old historic building downtown Panama City that had previously been a clothing store, became available for lease! I quickly jumped on the opportunity and remodeled it to make it my own.
Needless to say, it needed color, and an overhaul to make it the vibe I was hoping for. I love Color and vibrant patterns and textures. So that’s what I created- a space for woman to come, throw their stuff down on our sofa and enjoy a fun filled day of shopping while experiencing vibrant wallpaper, bright colors, and fun music to listen to, and maybe a little champagne on the weekends!
Historic Downtown Panama City is growing tremendously and becoming a vibrant community of businesses that love to see one another succeed. We all hold each other up and support one another.
I hope you will visit my store front or website and see why we are different than your average woman’s store. Each piece is hand picked by me (the owner) and chosen to help represent woman and lift up their confidence level to help them find their own kind of “pretty”
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy, that I have found in business is honesty and integrity. Being honest with a customer will get you so much farther than a little white lie just to make a sale. I would rather build a lasting relationship with a person so they can come back again and again instead of a one time purchase. This means the world to people, Just to show a little integrity. Now, don’t get me wrong, business is tough, it takes thick skin, grit and strength but it can also be so very rewarding to meet people and grow relationships built on honesty and truth!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source for new clients is always in person! Whether it be at a pop up event, walking in my store or just meeting a stranger on the street and learning a little about each other. Yes, online shopping is huge and a great resource as well as social media, but nothing beats striking up a conversation and actually showing interest in the person in front of you!
